So with about a month to go till the release of my iOS game I decided to take a break from coding the game and code a quick website instead.

I was just hoping for a bit of feedback and some pointers on whether I've missed anything that I should really add to the site. I do plan on adding some screenshots to the site when I can be bothered to code in a lightbox to view them and also add a Presskit()

Solid first site for a first game! I would make the box that the text is in more opaque, it's a little hard to scan through because the text blends in. Also, since there's very minimal text and description, I'd recommend making the font a few points larger for even easier scanning for visitors and to make it look a little less sparse.

It's great that you've included a video, but it would be beneficial to include screenshots alongside the description in case people don't want/can't click the video (my case as an example, YouTube is not available to me from where I'm writing right now)

Last, I would put the call-to-action you have with the app store link below the title logo, as well as where you have it at the bottom of the page. This will keep its location prominent if the person that's scrolling wants to convert and download it.
Cheers!

Personally, I like the retro background!
The text is indeed difficult to read and the previous suggestions given by Zogthor to correct this seem good.

As for the video, it's cool that you're going for the devlog-style video, but your voice's volume is a little low compared to the sound effects we hear.
If your game is out, maybe you should also go for a shorter, trailer-type video.

My general feeling is that it feels a bit amateurish for a website, but that might be OK at this point.

I'd like to add a few comments:
Make the text box not span on the whole width of the screen, keep it centered so we won't have to break our neck  Smiley
The font should be a bit larger and Sans Serif (more like Arial and less like New Times Roman) Serif fonts are usually kept for printed text. I like the google font Open Sans for example.

If you expect someone to click on the download button, put it in the center of the frame, maybe you can add an engaging text.

There is this great post: http://www.indiegamegirl.com/landing-page-design-and-how-to-use-it-to-sell-your-indie-game/

Good luck !

-  When I hover over an image, my mouse cursor should turn into a pointer.
-  You should give it a good proofreading.  For example, throughout is one word, not two.  Thank you is two words, not one.
-  I'm not sure the navbar serves a purpose.  It doesn't really feel like it belongs on the site, style wise.
-  This one doesn't matter, but the main website has a totally different color/styling scheme compared to the game website.
-  People like shit that's interactive.  When you hover over the Try the Beta button, give it a hover effect.  Make it change colors or something.
-  I'd probably get rid of the slight grey box around the title and try the beta area.
-  I'd push the youtube video over so that the right edge of the last image aligns with the right edge of the youtube video.
-  The site is kind of responsive, which is nice.  There's still a lot of room for improvement in that area, though.

i like it, simple and effective. A few suggestions:

1)i looked into the code, first add alt="" tag to your screenshots and "Name of game - describe what the screenshot shows" a few words, this good for image indexing and SEO overall.

2)Font is ugly as hell, use verdana or other type of fonts
3)See if you can use a H1 tag with your game title somewhere (SEO)
4)"<div class="screenshots">
            <img class="screenshot-thumbnail" id="screenshot01" src="img/media/website_screenshot_01.jpg">
            <img class="screenshot-thumbnail" id="screenshot02" src="img/media/website_screenshot_02.jpg">
            <img class="screenshot-thumbnail" id="screenshot03" src="img/media/website_screenshot_03.jpg">
            <img class="screenshot-thumbnail" id="screenshot04" src="img/media/website_screenshot_04.jpg">
            <img class="screenshot-thumbnail" id="screenshot05" src="img/media/website_screenshot_05.jpg">
            <img class="screenshot-thumbnail" id="screenshot06" src="img/media/website_screenshot_06.jpg">
         </div>"
align this to the center, and use more spacing between them, use hspace="" or some css

5) Add a css style border to the images.
6) Try to improve the beta button, improve the text, and add icons for (PC, Mac and Linux)
7) On this page http://defendtherocket.aaronwalwyn.com/beta.html since there is no navigation bar, when somebody presses the Logo should go back to previous stage.

Thats it for now, looks good overall, hope it helps.

Good luck!

It looks really good to me. The text is a little hard to read, but the background tones all match up nicely! I suggest you go with maybe #DDDDDD for the font color. That way it isn't an in your face white, but it isn't a dim grey either.

I would agree the text is a bit hard to read, but I do like the background actually.
And a small thing, your text on the link to privacy policy has a typo ('polcy').

Yeah, text is still a bit hard to read. Not that hard, but it should stand out more than it does right now.

bg image is nice but I can see some artifacting in it... is it possible to bump up the .jpg settings a bit? maybe try png-8?

I may be repeating what was already said, but I didn't read any of it.
I'll be blunt because I don't think sugarcoating helps anybody.

First I'll quickly state that I am using Chrome on Windows, there are a couple errors I see that may be the product of an untested platform, either ways here's what I see at first glance:

  • Alignment - There seems to be a problem with how things are lined up. I'll tell you how a designer once told me "ALWAYS USE A GRID". If you don't know what a proper grid should look like, be sure to look it up, this will drastically improve your design
  • Backgrounds - All the different text boxes and transparent background make the site feel way more busy than it needs to be. Use less borders and for the love of god turn up the opacity
  • Navigation - That navbar at the top just feels out of place, you should definitely fiddle with the colors because those ones are not working

Those are my quick gripes with the design, pardon me for any spelling/grammatical errors, it's 3AM and sleep is a requirement that must be met immediately.

The biggest problem with your site is the text. You shouldn't be using the default serif font there, try Verdana or something. It's particularly egregious in the "Try the Beta" button, you should really use something distinctive there.

The font color is awful as well, boring at best, barely readable at worst.

Fix that and you'll have a pretty decent site for your first game.

Thanks, the itch.io page is currently private until the pubic build is ready (few days hopefully) so it defaults to a 404 page.

Here is my feedback.

  • There's a lot of wasted space at the top between the white banner (which is largely empty) and the game's logo. Getting to the "meat" of the page takes some scrolling.
  • The Beta sign-up button and the Leave Feedback link don't have a mouse cursor when hovering. Instead, they have the "I" cursor that you would find when editing text. I'm on Firefox.
  • The Leave Feedback link doesn't look clickable unless you hover it. It blends in with the text above it.
  • The text which has your personal web page and the artist's web page aren't clickable.
  • Readability suffers a bit with the font you've chosen for the main text. Personally, I would choose something less "flashy" to improve accessibility.

Thanks for the feedback.
I'm planning on removing the white banner at the top as I agree it's not really needed for the site. I'll work on making those links work and show the correct mouse cursor.
