GAMEPLAY PROGRAMMER

Giant Squid is a small game development studio in Santa Monica, CA, headed by Matt Nava, former Art Director at thatgamecompany, known for his work on the award winning game "Journey". We are focused on creating innovative and deeply moving games that will inspire players, challenge convention, and push the boundaries of experiential and narrative interactive entertainment into new and unexpected areas.

ABZÛ is our premiere title. Kiss

We are looking for a multi-talented programmer/designer hybrid who will work with all departments to drive the creation of core gameplay features. This person has a natural sense of game theory and the ability to utilize code and other tools to make their designs a reality. Giant Squid prioritizes rich feedback over complex mechanics and values simple, intuitive gameplay that delivers an immersive experience to the player.

This role will involve brainstorming new gameplay ideas with the creative director and rapidly prototyping them in the game engine. Our process involves heavy experimentation and subtraction of all non-essentials to arrive at game elements that are elegant and iconic. The ability to self-critique and throw away ideas that aren’t working is crucial. Responding to user playtests will be a core part of this process.

Must have an artistic inclination and the ability to intelligently integrate art assets into gameplay mechanics.

Requirements:
- Have worked on at least one game with rich feedback, either solo or with a small team
- Fast prototyper who is capable of a high degree of polish when necessary
- Enjoys working on features such as player controls, camera, AI behaviors, and environmental feedback
- A good communicator who is most comfortable working at the intersection of the engineering and art disciplines
- Self motivated and capable of working autonomously
- Fluent in C++

Bonus:
- Experience with industry middleware such as Unreal Engine
