I second the idea of recording things on the spot on a phone or portable device. That way I've always got a good number of extra ideas that I can draw upon if I'm stuck on something. If you play multiple instruments I'd HIGHLY suggest swapping around what you're writing on. I find sometimes the song comes to me on guitar, sometimes on piano, sometimes on ukulele, and sometimes even on bass. Or heck, just singing in the car. I think from a production standpoint listening to video game music is great, but from a songwriting standpoint I would listen to classical, jazz, blues, anything that is instrumental. That way you're drawing inspiration from a lot of different places and applying them to whatever production style suits the project.
