Not a totally new idea, but Ken Wong's talk about designing Monument Valley raises some interesting questions regarding design. In particular, looking at designing games primarily as an experience with less emphasis on mechanics.

What are your thoughts on this? Games as experience vs Games as systems.

I'm usually of the mindset that games can be anything, and that you can go either way. But I have to say I did thoroughly enjoy Monument Valley and its like, and am interested to pursue this approach further.

Can't watch the video right now, but it sounds a lot like immersion; a fascinating topic. Read a really great article recently about it here.
