I've skimmed this thread and I see only console games. It's really a shame that 3D platformers left PC (the closest thing we have now is 2.5D titles like Explodemon or Giana Sisters Twisted dreams).

Maybe it has to do with analog controls. They're a pretty big deal for this genre, and PC owners usually expect to be able to play with a keyboard.

I think one of my favourite aspects of the Banjo games however is the dynamic music. Each world has a theme which changes instrumentation, pitch or tempo depending on whether you're indoors, underwater, doing a time trial, flying/high up, etc and it just works so well. yes banjo soundtracks are definitely among the top 5 of the midi era imo

Analog controls aren't required to make enjoyable 3D platformer what was shown by GREAT pc port of Rayman 2.

I think it has to do more with history, since PCs were originally atrocious for platformers because they were too slow (as you only got software rendering to a bitmap and nothing else) so usually PC wasn't considered seriously for them, and once 3D kicked in with completely different genres platformers went pretty much ignored on PC (maybe except those that were big names anyway, and usually were on consoles too). I know of a 3D platformer for PC I played some years ago, but I wouldn't say it was great, especially given how they screwed up the jump controls =/ (instead of jumping when pressing the button, you jump when releasing it... took me a while to figure out why my jumps were lagging when nothing else was) Maybe I'll try to find it again, it was freeware and was actually a puzzle platformer (not a collectathon), not sure if I still have the CD around.

If they screwed up something as simple as jump, then I'm not that interested.

just stopping by to say im still playing tooie and it still rules. old 3d platformers sure had some intricate-ass level design.

What I liked about Tooie's level design over Kazooie's, is that there is stuff going on at a micro scale. What I mean is, stuff like tunnels that only certain characters can fit through (Wumba transformation, Kazooie on her own, Banjo on his own, Clockwork eggs, etc), ledges that can be climbed along, cracks and holes you can look through to see other parts of the level. It was a subtle thing that made levels feel more alive.

Looks pretty, but super generic.
I feel like basic 3D platformer gameplay on it's own is super bland, so you need more than just head high platforms, goombas and an anthropomorphic protagonist to make it interesting.
