i actually kinda like the visual aesthetic of that. it looks like an interactive 90s D&D sourcebook lol.

VectorMan, anyone?

This game seemed really out there when I first played it (...oh wait.) But man, once I began to wrap my head around it...  Hand Shake LeftBig LaffHand Shake Right

It's probably got as much depth as first ed. D&D. I started it once and gave up because other games got in the way so I can't be sure but it sure ain't no Elder Scrolls. Maybe a bit more complex than Hexen because the UI is a bit on the nose. What it does have is character classes galore, like eleven or something which is nuts.

This turned out to be a pretty poor recommendation have to say.

I've played it as it was one of like 10 games on the Sega Smash Pack CD. Didn't get very far in it all - hard as balls if I remember correctly.  Or maybe I just sucked at games when I was a kid  Shrug

Mole Mania was fucking fantastic.

ikr

me and my friends all really liked that game back then. for me it was one of my favorite gb games along with pokemon and zelda link's awakening. once i got access to the internet i was surprised to find out how obscure it is. i thought it was going to be regarded as a classic for sure lol.
luckily it's available in the eshop for the 3ds (at least in the US). it's even cheaper than most of the other GB games for some reason!

thor's hammer - difficult puzzle adventure game where you're a gnome who throws a hammer that returns to you
squarez   - game was like tetris from a top down perspective, cool powerups yo
gearheads - it's like plants vs zombies from the 90's
warbreeds - an rts w/ unit customization based on genetics

the scorched earth mode game 'destruct' in Tyrian
Kiloblaster
Blake Stone and the Aliens of Gold
Raptor Call of the Shadows
Hoosier City II: Liberating Freedom City
Castle of the Winds
The old LOTR D&D based games (nice, somebody mentioned those)

Garden of Colored Lights https://www.allegro.cc/depot/GardenofColouredLights
  • which is actually by Linley Henzell, creator of Dungeon Crawl

and some games I'm not sure of the titles of like
-that old dos/windows one where you're a ball and you move around on platforms in space jumping around in warps or whatever
-and this one tactical game that i'll never find where you're kind of like an x-com dude with a MAG and you're using energy weapons to fight people or aliens in a city, but the zoom level is pretty close up

Any of you ever played Prince of Destruction?

It's an old action RPG that I always thought was Mac only, but apparently a DOS version also existed. I couldn't find any trace of it on the internet, though the Mac version is still available at Macintosh Garden.

You could play it multiplayer over the local network, which was pretty neat - no game I've played since quite captures the same feeling. The controls were super awkward and janky, and the level designer(s) had a bad habit of sticking mazes that were about 20 times as large as they needed to be inside otherwise normal dungeons (with no automapping or anything, so you're on your own for navigation), but it still did a lot of things right. I'm a sucker for dialogue systems that let you type keywords freeform, so talking to NPCs is a minigame in itself.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned Glider PRO - that was totally my jam back in the day. I used to host a gigantic archive of user-made levels for it on my website. I ought to get that back online again for preservation...

(Super Solvers / Challenge of the) Ancient Empires. Though it doesn't seem as obscure as I thought it is after a quick google search.

This thread again. What the hell, maybe someone's played Mind Walker for the Amiga? It was like... an early 3D Metroid. In 1986.
