Kinda. It seems like it just hides the windows that are supposed to be on the other 'workspaces'.

I know Linux fanatics bring this up every time there's a new version of another OS, but it really does seem like Microsoft has just said "fuck it" and are outright copying Linux now. Seriously, one of the big new additions is that you can copy/past in the terminal and have it be semi-transparent. And there's now a 'Home' folder type thing in the file explorer.

Considering the only reason I use Windows is engineering software and games, I welcome any changes that make it more similar to Linux and its popular window managers.  Of course, it would be much better if the proprietary software giants would just support Linux in the first place.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I absolutely agree. I miss a bunch of stuff from Linux whenever I'm in Windows. It's just sad that Microsoft seems to be stagnating a bit creatively and resorting to stealing stuff that's been in other operating systems for years (I guess I'm actually more flabbergasted that it took them this long to steal these obvious UI improvements from Linux).

i don't care how "creative" my OS is, i care whether does what i want it to, so i literally couldn't give less of a shit about companies "stealing" UI improvements.

As a company, Microsoft seems to be stagnating creatively. When a good deal of the new features in the newest version of Windows is stuff that other operating systems have had for decades, it gives the impression of a company that doesn't have a vision for its product. I suppose the Modern UI was that vision, but all that seems to have resulted in is a Frankenstein's monster of a desktop and touchpad interface crammed together.

To be fair, Microsoft has been borrowing ideas from other OSes for a long time. I mean, the very idea of a windowed OS with a desktop was pretty directly taken from Macintosh OS.

Oh well I dont care if it's stolen/borrowed/reinterpreted, It's standard on OSX and most linux distro's I just want it. And if it's not there I am sad.

I personally don't give a fuck anymore, I know my preferred OS but have to work on all 3 races anyway quite regularly. I just tend to try to not work with windows as long as its not there.
And these external utility apps that sort of do it are sorry excuses.

As a company, Microsoft has 128,000+ employees. If Microsoft were a city, it would be the city with around the 200th largest population in the US, placed somewhere approximately between Charleston, South Carolina, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Obviously, not all of their employees live in the same city (or country), but that's beside the point.

The Windows teams collectively have around 800-1,200 people.

Ubuntu probably has ~150-350 people working on it, for comparison.

Build two large balls. Use construction materials such that one ball weighs approximately 100lbs, while the other ball weighs approximately half a ton. Build an even ramp with a 30° grade. (Make sure that the cof between the ramp and each ball is close to ~0.65.) Roll both balls down the ramp, and, using nothing but your own strength, attempt to impact each ball with enough force in order to significantly alter its trajectory. Your assignment is to write a 1,500 word report on methods you would use to improve your core strength in order to more easily impact the trajectory of each ball (e.g. examples of core training exercises, high protein diets, etc.)

... *bangs head against wall*

So that's the issue I've seen being complained around elsewhere. I mean, I know bbLean BlackBox did that but only because it was a hack that could cause issues, and even then it still provided a setting to switch to proper workspace behavior. I don't understand why can't Microsoft get it right since they have full control over the GUI.

And there's now a 'Home' folder type thing in the file explorer.

As somebody who didn't check Windows 10: how is that any different than showing My Documents in the list? (I mean, even Windows 98 did that technically)

The Windows teams collectively have around 800-1,200 people.

And this is clearly a big part of the problem Microsoft is currently facing. They're bloated and unwieldy, and this excess size makes it much harder for them to adapt to swift changes in the market. In the past decade, the markets Microsoft is invested in have changed dramatically.

A lot of the "blunders" we've been seeing from Microsoft recently are just a matter of them attempting to change gears. (and failing to do so gracefully) Right now, Microsoft needs their own version of Steve Jobs, and they don't have one. Steve Jobs wasn't valuable just because he was visionary. He was valuable because he was a forceful, insistent ass-hole who could and would push people to great lengths to realize his personal vision. When you have a big company, you need someone like that to unify everyone's vision and maintain consistency.

This is part of the reason why Sony has been doing so well with the PS4. They picked the right person to lead that effort, and got out of his way. Mark Cerny kept things on track and came up with the right kind of competitive hardware for the time. Of course, Sony still doesn't have someone to do the same for their film business, or their general electronics business, or their computer business. It's not like they're firing on all cylinders either.

Microsoft is bloated and fragmented, and needs to start getting its act together.

It looks like the 'Home' thing isn't really a physical folder, but a hodgepodge of recently opened documents and favorites and stuff. I've only seen it on some YouTube videos, but it seems to be a complete mess and not very handy.

Ouch (so I guess it has nothing to do what I think as "home"). Even sadder when considering that they had gotten that one right before, I remember that stuff being part of the Start Menu.
