How much does it cost to maintain online multiplayer servers for a game on iOS or Android?

For a simple backend for async games, check out Parse.com or one of their competitors.
Parse's pricing: https://parse.com/plans - others are very similar.

If you need a synchronous server (like for an MMO) then it's more work. You'll need to lease some number of (virtual) servers, and either write your own server software or buy licenses for something like SmartFox.
