I'm sure I've seen not long ago a video of a tool that used a cheetah for automatic detection of shape that also lowered the amount of points in the auto-polygon heuristically. I can't remember the name, if it was done or a kickstarter.
EDIT: It might have been "PhysicsEditor", but that's not good because it doesn't support joints.

I need something like that, not even to animate but at least "bones" (joints/pivots) and manual authoring of polygon/circle shapes for 2D with a friendly export format (XML, JSON...)

I've already looked into Spriter and Spine and they do not support circle/polygon geometry (or hide it very well Tongue )

It's been a while since I used it but I'm pretty sure that Spine does support polygon shapes.
