Coopetition

I was at the San Francisco jam.

So it looks like everyone had the "When we're together, we'll never run out of problems" theme. We had 3 constraints to choose from as well: thin, evolved, or rotating. We chose to use rotating by causing the world to rotate while playing.

We used the theme by creating a 2 player game where both players movements influence the other player. The players can choose to cooperate to pick up as many coins as possible or compete to get all the coins for themselves, sometimes in the same game.

We all had a blast making this game!

Thats interesting, they told us everyone had different themes, but it looks like it was just the 3 adjectives that were different.

Correct, everyone's game had to be 5 minutes or less and follow the quote "As long as we're together we'll always have problems."

i forgot to ask, did you guys all have judges at the other game jams? awarding 1st 2nd and 3rd places for experimental games really detracted it for me. making games to win prizes and making games for shits and giggles are completely different imo.

(probably just bitter because i didnt win Tongue)

I actually tend to agree, having a judging competition makes it too focused on the end result rather than the process. Plus I'd be worried about people choosing more conventional game ideas they knew would work over original ones that might fail just to win. Game jams are about creating something interesting, not something polished.

First post here...

I was at México GGJ making
http://www.globalgamejam.org/2010/pikosis

I had a real good time doing this one... hope you like it.

Pikosis is part die-a-lot platformer, part puzzle. You control Borago Gomez, a guy that knows the solution for all 10 levels but won't tell you. Oh, and he also knows how to moonwalk.

I really like the way they did it in Calgary: no one knew there was going to be prizes or rankings, but they gave first place a box full of goodies at the end as a surprise.

(probably biased though because my team won Tongue)

This thread is old. But it's relevant so it's okay.

There was no judging at my Jam. No one seemed to mind.

Our Jam (Finnish Game Jam) was at three different sites (small country) where they selected 2-3 finalists and after that some jury selected the "Best Game" of our whole Jam.
I think the prize for that "Best Game" was a challenge cup on which team members got their names and also subscription to a local game magazine. Also Microsoft gave 400€ to best Silverlight game.

There was only one Silverlight game. :D

We also got to vote for Jammers Favorite.

In a way I would have liked if there at least weren't any prizes, but I guess some recognition (like the Jammers Fav) doesn't hurt.

Ah ah... this makes me laugh a lot. In our chapter, there was a Microsoft guy (very nice, to be honest) which gave a speech about how to do games in XNA just before the jam. There were 3 XNA games, none really finished.

There was no contest or judging in our chapter, in Catania, Italy. This created a relaxed atmosphere, in my opinion. A contest would have hurt the good feeling of creativity that was in the air.

Anyway, this is our entry: http://www.globalgamejam.org/2010/secret-donkey-high-hat
Don't be hard on it, we only got one simple level. But I think the game deserves for the intro!

I was on a 5-person team over at MIT GAMBIT in Boston, and we did RunRunRunJump.

We used Unity, and it was the first time I've gotten to mess with it much - it was a great experience.  Our constraints, besides "abstraction" and "deception" were one of, "rain", "plain", or "Spain".  We went with "plain".

I really wish I'd had a bit more time to tweak some of it - a bunch of the stuff on the second level is spaced too closely, so if you're busting ass through the level, the timing can get a bit wonky.  We're also not killing you when you fall off the upper part of level 2 at a couple points when we should, so you just get dumped into the later portion of the level.

Also - have the sound on.  The sound that Dan Perry did for it pretty much make the game.
