Who here has played the SNES RPG EarthBound? It is my favorite video game of all time, and I've beaten it for the sixth time yesterday. It was also the first video game I was really interested in and it was the first I had beaten. One thing that I really liked about the game was the HP/PP odometers, because I had never seen an RPG with that before, and it made some battles easier. The modern setting was another thing I really liked about it, too.

So, who here has played EarthBound?

I think most people here probably would have played it! That said, I haven't touched Mother 3 yet. Need to see if someone's gone and translated it.

EDIT: No, not yet.

Luckily, both translator sides (Starmen.net and Mother3.org) have decided to work together on releasing a translation. I've tried playing it without the translation, and I've gotten pretty far (about 1 or 2 chapters before the final chapter.).

i enjoyed earthbound/mother 2

it has aged quite well in the intervening years. the simple pixel art seemed dated even for its time, when compared to ff6 which had come out at more or less the same time. but these days i can appreciate the simple charm of the graphics.

bonus fact!

when i grow up, i wanna be like shigesato!

The games creator, Shigesato Itoi is like, a modern day renaissance man - he does everything now from design t-shirts to authoring one of the most popular blogs in Japan: http://pingmag.jp/2006/06/09/shigesato-itoi/

I have played Earthbound, and though I'll probably be linched and sodomized by the rest of the indies around here, I gave up on it after being stuck in an area I found really, really annoying and boring. I don't remember much about it, I think it was underground or something. When I think of getting this game again and trying to beat it, I think of that part, and the urge goes away.

I absolutely adore the entire Mother series.
MOTHER3 especially stands out to me, but the other two are spectacular.

I could say a lot more, but I won't, because then I would talk for too long.

And there's a website dedicated to the translation here:

Yay!  I love Earthbound.  It's such a moving game about friendship.

I love how you get homesick when you don't call your mom!  Little details like that make it, like, the most lovable game ever.

You either stopped at the gold mine in the Desert or you stopped at Stonehenge. Both are somewhat annoying, but you should try pressing on. I originally stopped at Stonehenge because it was frigging annoying trying to get the Sword of kings, until I just decided to say "screw it" and forgot about the weapon.

It's pretty awesome to see that there are some people here who really like it (like Lancer-X said). =D

I also forgot to mention that it was pretty damn sweet to see the Franklin Badge as an item in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

I'm another person that didn't play through all of EarthBound... mainly because of the battle engine. Sad

You mean a turn based battle system which practically every popular rpg on the snes had? There's is nothing wrong with it.

I could see why some people can't get into turn-based RPG battles.  I totally dig 'em, but they can be tedious.

In Earthbound's case, though, they always seemed to go by quickly.  Plus, you can see the enemies, they avoid you when you're strong enough, and you gain levels quickly - they're much more manageable in Earthbound than in most fantasy RPG's.

I loved the Prayer ability that... I can't remember what her default name is but I called her Fran Kiss... had.

Nothing wrong with turn based battles, IMO.

I didn't like how there were no character graphics or backgrounds. You were always just floating in some strange abstract void, your characters were just represented by stat boxes and the super attacks were just vector graphics. I also found the text describing the battle was too long and a poor substitute for having characters/animations. At the time, the battle system felt really cheap (as in they didn't seem to invest any time/money in fleshing it out visually) and boring compared to other RPGs to me.

I can see how that wouldn't make a big difference to some people, but it was one of the things about the game that turned me off.
