I am completely lost, I have never done any environment art and I have no idea how to even approach this

I want to make enviro assets for top-down 2d alien planet

after a few hours of messing around I've ended up here, and I feel like it's a dead end




thoughts? advice?  ideas?

Well, first of all you could tell where exactly the problem is. The ground texture looks nice. Maybe too small comparing to the character over there but nice.

really? I feel like it doesn't fit very much, but maybe making it a bit larger would help

If the character was ~32...64px, the ground texture would fit in the scene. However, hard to say anything since you didn't bring up anything about your project/game/scene/etc.

I like top-down shooters and i have made several of them(demos and alphas). Here is a screen of what i'm currently working on:
