Do any exist? I've been trawling through character and tileset tutorials, but couldn't find anything in the way of guides for stuff like the backgrounds in shmups, where the backgrounds don't parralax and help to create a narrative for the level.

I'm sure I could manage without, but id manage far better with. My textural technique could use work for sure.

Tutorials for making large images in general would be better.

Although if this helps, remember that backgrounds in old games were tilemaps as well (just like the foreground), so in theory you can still apply what you learn in tilemap tutorials, just remember you're aiming for a different kind of layout.
