Hello!

I have been working on a little indie car game called Animal Drivers and it's starting to look decent enough to humbly show it off to you guys.

Animal Drivers is a stunt car game where you have to complete a bunch of goals before the clock runs out, like doing tricks with the car to reach the high scores, collecting letters to form a word, finding stunt jumps, searching for hidden items, etc. It's kind of a cross between Tony Hawk and a car game! But a slightly smaller emphasis on skateboarding and vertically challenged pants.

The art style is inspired by games like Zelda: Windwaker, Animal Crossing and Mario Kart. Every texture in the game is drawn "by hand" in Adobe Illustrator (which I can tell you takes a whole lot of time;). Like a complete idiot, I am doing everything from programming, design, 3d modeling, art and game design myself. Music I am leaving to the pro's however! I don't think my attempts at music would be anything but an exceptionally painful aural experience.

Techwise, I am using Unity to create the game, Maya for 3D and Illustrator/Photoshop for textures. Oh and a spatula. I use that spatula a lot. Man. What. A. Spatula.

Here's a little video showing off the game in action. This is from one of the stunt jump hunts:

And Gifs galore!

I would really love to hear some feedback, and will be updating this post with more pictures as soon as I have more to show! I can't promise those pictures will be of the game. They might be of golden spatulas. You'll have to excuse those, but mostly, I'll be posting pictures related to this game. I am very serious about this game. Pretty serious about spatulas too, but quite seriously; they aren't as serious as games are.

Ah this looks awesome!  I love games like this.  As for suggestions, I would maybe suggest a few graphical tweaks?  Like making the sky more dynamic and less blocky, and making the ground look slightly less flat when it transitions from grass to pavement or whatever.  It looks super nice though!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll have a look at the sky, that's a good point. And I totally agree with the transitions from grass to pavement, i'm a little new to level design so I'm trying to find a nice way to blend textures. I'm looking into a vertex paint plugin in Unity, so I will probably brush over everything with that before launch.

jamesprimate: haha thanks, happy to hear that!

I'll post more stuff soon!

Some new screenshots and an update about the game!

Pictures first:

Then words:

The game is coming along nicely, and I have two levels completed and I will be soft-launching it at some point during the summer. We're having a baby in about a week (yikes!), so i'm sure I won't be able to work as much on the game in a little while Wink Hoping to get it out properly very soon though!

UPDATE:

The game is nearly done and I am pushing to get this out in Q3 2015 (hopefully August on iOS).

Here's the final gameplay trailer!

Nice polished game :D

Some points:
- The game crashed the first time I ran on loading screen ( before the level )
- Are you loading the whole level? Cause I felt like the FPS is drops at times.

Also, are you using Unity wheel colliders or did you use a custom car system?

1. Ack, I've had another user experience this, I will have to look into this. Might have something to do with the Game Center login. Are you on iPhone or Android?
2. Yep, I'm loading the whole level and doing a so-called shader-warm up to get most of the level assets loaded. It works well on most devices, but some take an fps hit here and there unfortunately. Not sure how to fix it without getting memory problems...
3. I'm using Edy's Vehicle Physics for the car physics, and it uses Unity Wheel colliders.

Is there anyway you can knock the rabbits off your car? Then they just run after you until they catch up. That would be funny.

Nifty graphics I see there.

Haha yeah, that's a whole game in itself right there!
