Well, I've finally gotten around to finishing White Butterfly, my latest vertical shooter. It's a bit like Garden of Coloured Lights.

It looks like this:

The Shmup-dev.com forum thread is here.

And Indiegames has put up a video on youtube

.

You can get it from sourceforge here. And here are the download links:
Windows binary (.zip)
Source code (.zip)

Let me know what you think. Have fun!

Love the ship with beams, and the soundtrack
Finding the remaining lives' counter took me quite some time though. Maybe it would be easier if the markers were shaped like the player's ship - they look a bit like some of the shapes in the background now. On the other hand maybe it just 'cause I have a cold at the moment. Coffee

Ah, I always look forward to your beautiful shooters, Linley! Innovative and elegant, as usual. Quite the standard you've got going, eh?

Also difficult. But all so calming that it's ok!

This game is so amazing, and so amazingly hard!  I love its challenge  Kiss  It seems like you've found that are of hardness that isn't just annoying, it's fun.

I also love the arb beams, they are quite shiny, though they're a bit weak...

This is different from other shmups in the sense that there are no bullet clearing, absorbing, or reflecting abilities. Also, why is there a slow movement key even though there are no situations that call for it?

Oh, I definitely thing there's situations when that key helps out.  The second boss on the first level, for instance.  The only times I've beaten it have been because of the slow down key (and yeah, you can probably tell how much I suck at this game now).

So I've just hit this from the front page and hot-damn! It owes a lot to the bullet-hell genre but it only teases you into that mindset then sucker-punches you with a far less formulaic bullet pattern.

I've just been demolished three times running on the first stage but I'm still having the time of my life; a resounding success of a game  Hand Thumbs Up Left

Can't get enough of your visual style!

It's nice that it's hard, reminds me of ancient times when games were too hard to realistically finish, so doing so was really an achievement.

I don't really think you can consider this a bullet hell game, because it's more about efficient killing then dodging. Also, I recently beat level one using the hand of xom.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm glad that people seem to like it.

I grew up with a C64, and it had some hard, hard games on it. Things like Armalyte or The Last Ninja, where you had to be pretty much a god to get even halfway through. When you finished Armalyte you really felt a sense of accomplishment (or at least I assume you would. I never did). I've tried to recreate that a little bit in some of my games.

hey, can this be made for mac like garden of colored lights was?

Yep, it should work on any system that can run GoCL.

Oh no, The Last Ninja?  I heard that that game is heck on wheels for C64.

You know what would be awesome?  If you could make your own ships! (and yes, I know that you guys are going to say "just download the source!", but I don't do Allegro WTF )
