At the time of writing I've got about 14 hours to go until LD starts. I want to actually take part and see it through, I didn't make it the last time I attempted. I know you LD veterans have some ancient secret warm-up rituals, some means of combating the fatigue and staving off the pressure of the impending deadline. Share with us neophytes your mysterious ways!

As it stands my battle plan involves a lot of caffeine and not a lot of sleep, and if that doesn't pan out a half gallon of vodka. So basically, I'll take any advice I can get!

Some of mine.

1. Go outside. Before the jam and at least once every 24h. Good break from the chaos can really bring clarity on what you were doing.
2. Check that you have all the tools you need available.
3. Learn to take naps week in advance.

Quite boring. I wish I had some cool voodoo tips.

As far as warm-ups go, I try to get as much sleep as possible. That is, if I know for a fact that I'll be available for the weekend.

Otherwise I get lots of caffeine and good music revved up Cheesy

Here's what the past 3 LDs have been like for me.

Before the theme is announced :

1. Wake up late
2. Do as little work as possible (no computer work)

When/after the theme is announced :

1. Check what the theme is. Have literally 1000 ideas and no ideas at the same time.
2. Work it out on paper.
3. Get an idea that seems good. Start working on it.
4. Realize the idea is shit. A day has gone by, so.. wth, keep going with it.
5. Release a shit game, but better in some ways, than the ones I did before.
6. Realize it was a good learning experience, even though the game was shit.

After the compo :

1. Play other people's games. Realize what could have been done with that theme.
2. Stream and hang out with people. (one of the best parts of LD for me).
3. Watch people playing my game (another one of the best parts of LD).

I am a horrible procrastinator, somehow I function better when I am on the edge of my seat doing everything at the last minute. Even getting up in the morning and getting the kids off to school, the closer I am to the time I need to get them fed, dressed, and out the door the quicker I shake off the morning fog and roll out of bed (so I keep the alarm set so that it leaves me cutting it close).

I think the overwhelming sense of urgency keeps me from over-thinking it and that allows me to maintain my momentum. I think that is why participating in LD interests me so much.

The only time I had anything done for LD was when I wasn't really thinking about it, just going with the flow. So just take it easy and it'll be fine I guess?  Tongue

This is exactly my experience of Ludum Dare. I think I need to play more indie games though. I've been playing nothing but Dota, hearthstone, and AAA games, and it's really hard for me to think of ideas. All of my Ludum Dares so far except one (so that means 3/4) have been about dodging obstacles. Seeing as Ludum Dare is really the only time I try coding, I really have to think of something more inventive.
