Hello! I have been lurking here for quite a long while, so I suppose it's time I start contributing. I've tried my hand at game development a few times now, but failed mostly due to motivation; But this time I'm sticking with it  Tongue
See you all around.

Hi fellow humans!

I'm really interested in programming and game development, and I'm struggling to get something done, but most of the time at the end of the day when I get some free time I just
have no more energy... Panda

Hi, my name's Mark and I'm returning to my original love of making video games after being distracted by a 5 year career as a Technical Director in the visual effects industry.

I got sick of being pigeonholed as 'the programmer guy' and left my career, determined to prove them wrong by teaching myself how to draw and become a freelance commercial artist. I didn't expect it to take 5 years but I managed to document much of the learning process through a series of vlogs. I also

so I could control my brush size and smoothing via MIDI footpedals and get some decent ruler/ellipse guides.

I never did achieve commercial success as an artist though I found myself spending a lot of time aimlessly making art. Then one day I did a bit of fan art for Mojang's jam game 'Catacomb Snatch' which caused my twitter to explode overnight. So, I did a lot of fan art for other indie games, but then along came TOJam 2012, which made me realize that all this time my hometown was home to this thriving community of indie game devs.

Nowadays, I am developing games with Game Maker Studio and handling all aspects of production including programming, art/animation and music and sound. It's hard not to get sidetracked and sometimes I wish I didn't have to do everything myself, but then again it's not like companies are throwing themselves at me to hire me.

That's life.

Thank you for reading my saga of shameless self-promotion and unwarranted self-importance.

Hello TIG,

I finally took my courage, and registered here. I come from a art/creative background, and am mere a diletante coder compared to others here.

In my previous lives, I've been a graphic designer, a translator (JA/EN/FR), an illustrator, a "digital art director" in a web-agency, a semantic web zelot Smiley, and generally a pain in the ass of my friends developers, who I restlessly try to recrute into my game projects (disclaimer: I might try to do the same here).

Let's be honest: I do have a weird fascination for oldschool tile-based games aesthetics. It is probably a generational thing Smiley

I have been working for a while on a DOM based tile-based game engine, not sure if the project will actually get finished... maybe I'll do a more complete presentation in another thread?

Nice to meet you guys, I love you all and your creativity.
You made me remember why I fall in love with video games when I was a kid - I almost forgot Smiley .

Hello all! I'm SF.

My background is in music and computer science. I graduated from university a couple years ago am currently living in Manitoba with my partner of 10 years.

My career thus far has been in freelance web development and IT work for small businesses, which I have hated with all of my innards.

As for my appearance; I'm 26 years old but I still get carded frequently. I seem to confuse a lot of people I meet in person as to what gender I am, and I get confused in turn as to why it matters to them so much.

I've recently founded Game Builder Club and Building 3d Game Birds Gameapp Maker Co. (working title) and have just started prototyping a game about privatized firefighting in a procedurally generated Libertarian dystopia.

Cool fax:
  • I game at a competitive level and have attained a number of world records for speedrunning in Sonic Colours and Generations
  • I held the world record for world's youngest Microsoft Certified Product Specialist for several years (age 9, previous record holder was 16)
  • I had a chance to double-high-five Anamanaguchi once but got too shy
  • My health is very poor and I still haven't taken the Christmas tree down yet
  • I am going to make video games or die trying

Hello tigsource,

My name is Rafael. I've started with the urge to create games when I was little. Back then, I opened MS Paint and simulated games with the pixels.

Then I've entered the realm of RPG Maker 2k3 and started numerous of incomplete games, never finishing a single one.
Afterwards, I've caught the UnrealTournament train and modeled some basic maps in the UnrealEditor.

By this time I still had few programming notion. I liked using "switch"es and "if"s, barely understood loops and never created a "function".

But then I started dwelling more into code and learned Pascal, HTML, php, SQL, javascript and attempted to do browser games. Later on I jumped to more and more languages and started to learn Game Design more by the book.

During all this time, I was always accompanied by a constant hair growth that kept me warm in the cold and rainy nights.

Hey there!
I've been a lurker for the longest time, but when I finally got to post something, I forgot to do it here first.

My name is Yanko, I hail from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and I'm 50% of this indie game collective (or studio, or group, or whatever you call a small group of people who make games and aren't legally a company yet  Grin) called deVoid Games.

We've already made quite a few games in the past couple of years (including 2 political satires, 1 bigger-than-we-could-afford action/turn-based-strategy that got shelved, some flash games, and 1 released mobile game called TriboT).

Right now, I'm working on a Leap motion game (which I'm devblogging here on the forums, any feedback would be greatly apreciated!) and on my master's thesis, which is basically treating my girlfriend's aracnophobia with games and (if everything goes as planned) biofeedback.

So there. Howdy!

Hey dudes!

My name is Dan and I'm an indie up in Canada.  I run a little studio called Polybit Games where me and some friends make games that are fun and hard, and also cute... but super hard.  You can check out what we are up to, here: http://polybitgames.com

I got into games a LONG time ago and it actually all started with my dads Intellivision.  Man, that was something else, I was only about 5-7 but I was so into it, my dad was too, we'd stay up late playing everything from Boxing to Dungeons and Dragons (that minotaur scared the life out of me everytime).  When we finally got a NES, my addiction already had sufficient fuel but I don't think my mind was quite prepared for what a step up the NES actually was.  I've had almost every console out there since then at one point of my life or another, but only keep my all time favorites around or else I'd have no place to sleep.

My favorite games have always been the ones that affect me, doesn't have to be deep, it can be subtle, it almost always is, but it's where I get my enjoyment from, that connection.  I don't have any particular favorites as it's just too hard to single out any one game.  Not every game can do it, but those special ones that do, i hold them dear.

I currently work in the industry as well, as a concept artist at a big studio and it's exactly what I do during the day that drives what I do at home at night.

I'm new here, it's taken me a while to finally get around to posting but I look forward to making some good connections with people doin' what they love, for the love of it.

Cheers!

Hi, folks!

The name's Keon. I'm a fresh-faced youngster with plenty of ideas about art, game design and storytelling but little experience with programming so far. Watch my dreams get crushed in real time, hurr hurr.

I stumbled upon this forum via the official Fez thread, and decided it's as good a place as any to start with this indie gaming business. Gomez I've always wanted to make video games, but until recently it seemed like an unreachable goal. Now I can start as soon as I get Game Maker...

As for my background in gaming, I've been hooked ever since I found a Game Boy with Tetris and Pokémon Red in it. My early childhood was almost exclusively Nintendo, playing classics like Yoshi's Island. Later on I got some computer games, point-and-click adventures and Civilization II. I've been big on indie stuff recently (obviously): Braid, Fez, VVVVVV, Journey, The Stanley Parable, anything by Shaun Inman, I'm itching to try out Cave Story – and I've barely scratched the surface! There are plenty of works in progress on this very forum that I can't wait to get my hands on. (Is the guy who made Melodisle doing anything right now?)

What I want to do is help legitimize games as an art form. Like comic books and cinema before it, I think video games are the emerging art of this generation and it's our duty to show the world what we can do with them. I want to take existing genres, tear them down and build them back up piece by piece. I want to subvert the player's expectations, make him or her question their own worldview in the way that only the interactive medium can.

That said, what specialized skills can I bring to the table here? For one thing, I'm a self-taught linguist (nowhere near professional, though) with experience in creating languages and analyzing anthropology in general. If you need someone to run your fictional culture by or make up some details for, I'm your man. Or I could just be your two-cent art critic, whatever.

To our collective health, and all that rot!

Hi everybody!

My name is Petr and I am a member of our small independent studio Rake in Grass (currently three people) located in Czech republic. I'm the coding guy so I'm developing the engine we are using, porting our games to Mac and iOS and other platforms and of course coding the games :) You may know our shmup game Jets'n'Guns or 2D platformer Archibald's Adventure. My gaming experience started long long time ago in the zx-spectrum era with games like Knigt Lore or Sir Fred and I'm a gamer since then.

Hey there!

The name's Pixel_Crusher. I'm no game programmer or designer (I do have some game ideas in mind though!), I'm just a simple gamer who happens to enjoy indie gaming quite a lot.

I like indie games so much in fact that I even made an account here just for the sake of discussing the preservation of indie games for the future (shameless plug). Yet in retrospective, I probably should have introduced myself here to the community before hastily starting such a post.  Embarrassed

Hi!
I'm from Germany. I started out as a 3D-artist with some programming knowledge. Expanded upon that while working for two minor game-developers for about three years, but got selfemployed about two years ago.
Now I am trying to get small projects out there by myself - though I would prefer to work with a partner or with a small team.

I never got much connection to the indie-scene, but now I am realizing that I - in fact - am an indie-developer.

Hello everyone, we are Three Legged Egg! We are a group of three guys from Budapest, Hungary.  We are newer to these forums and don't have a great amount of free time for individual accounts so we thought we would share one to get involved with the community here.

We are working on a mobile game that we can't wait to show everyone soon  Smiley  The feedback is something this place is well known for and we can't wait to hear from everyone and help out in every way we can as well!

Hi All,

Figured I should introduce myself before posting here (excluding this one), so here goes:

Where to start? Uhm, well... I've worked in the games industry for a little under 25 years and am at a place now where I'm really kinda disillusioned with the state of affairs as a whole. I'll try to not turn this into a rant but suffice to say that I see the Indie scene as the saving grace of the industry. I grew up with computers at a time when anything really went. The C64 and ZX Spectrum were the computers du-jour and there was an incredible amount of experimentation going on, both on the software and hardware side. Over time it became big money and now we're in a place where everything is controlled by bean counters and risk has become a dirty word.

Ayight, I'll leave it at that. I absolutely LOVE the freshness the indie-scene brings and the fact that (the majority) of people are driven by their shear passion for games. Personally, I'm trying to get back to my roots, which means writing games again on my terms. Ye olde internet has made meeting people a heck of a lot easier and I'm eager to meeting new people and participating in lively / passionate discussions.
