So I'm godsavant, just a normal guy with a hobby for making videogames.

just a normal guy

Lies, damned lies. That's an Abnormally wonderful painting. It's so cute! And... perfectly done. Probably the best Quote ever. And we've seen some good Quote in our time. You're making that game with the... numerous awesome characters in it? Like Rabbits and Jesus and A Large Blue Thing? Yay. Welcome!

'ello.

I don't particularly make indie games, but I'm very interested in them. Indie games have become sort of a refuge for me because:

  • They're the only place to find dead or experimental genres.
  • I have no money.
  • They're usually new and fresh experiences that don't have to go through the publishing pipelines.

I've always been more interested in games being environments and worlds than being difficult or competitive. I'm one of the only two people I know that went through the whole Myst series. That being said, I'm an avid Halo player.

I used to administrate MFGG, one of the largest fangame websites on the net, but I quit about a month ago after the community slid into the shitter. Since I have a fangaming background, I'm not used to having to make my own assets for games; I've always enjoyed making the overall experience of the game than having to spend time on the graphics.

I really want to try creating original games soon, but I just don't have the talent or interest to create all the graphics and sound. The most recent project I finished (Mario's Time Battle) borrows a lot of its atmosphere from Donnie Darko and Eraserhead, and that's difficult to pull off without having the resources. Especially in the audio department.

(on a similar note, is it okay to post things with non-original assets? Mario's Time Battle has absolutely nothing to do with Mario besides the main character's sprite, but it borrows a lot of graphics and sounds from other places)

So yeah, here I am. Hopefully one day I'll be able to make something entirely original!

Hey Shadsy, it's awesome to see someone else here who is more of a player than a designer.  Welcome to the party!

Yeah, we definitely need some players; most indy gamers are also game makers. Keep at it, and welcome!

Hey there i'm new. Been relying on the site for it's news for a long time. You may have seen me posting comments occasionally as Oob.

I used to make really bad K'n'P games when I was a kid and also replace all the words in BBC BASIC games with things like COCKBALLS. I then made this mod for Liero, replacing all the weapons (http://www.kgivler.com/files/liero/TC/Mayhem.zip) and finally started making ham-fisted mods for Quake by ramming together lots of other people's code. Spoonmatch (http://www.moddb.com/mods/646/spoonmatch) was my masterpiece at time.

Recently i've been frantically trying to learn to make something every time a TIGSource compo comes around but I never quite make it. Next time!

So I just registered here, and since there's an introduction thread I guess I should do this. Here it goes.

I am of the opinion that games have failed to become relevant beyond their own context, and that the medium has a huge potential that is untapped as of yet, so I'm a big proponent of games with content that transcends the game itself, games that make you think, teach, communicate, illustrate, and just do something relevant for the player's life and for society, beyond serving as mere entertainment.

Critical as I've become of the medium, of course, I'm now trying to take matters into my own hands by making games myself. I'm actually a graphic design student doing my final project, which will become my first videogame: in it, the player will create visual compositions, which the game will evaluate according to parameters such as symmetry, color temperature and rhythm, in such a way that the player will actually be free to make the composition they want (with the 'objects' they are given) as long as they keep a clear focus. It's going to be kind of a mix between Mario Paint and Puyo Puyo, if you can somehow picture such a thing. The player will get better scores as he learns to compose through the game.

So, as it is now evident, I have joined here to learn more about making games independently, discussing such games, discussing where developers should lead the medium, etc.

Oh, and how did I get into the indie scene as a player? I guess the big eye opener was Knytt, for me; before that, I knew that there were good indie games, but with Knytt I became aware that there is so much to do beyond the usual commercial stuff. I guess only at that point did I realize that the medium was a stranded island, and that there were so many directions to take it from there.

So, hi, guys. Nice to meet you.

 Shocked

That was thorough. Not sure what else to say, other than hooray, and welcome! Oh, and your project sounds like a very cool concept. Would love to see it here once you're all good and done. A game which scores creativity... yes, quite nice.

agj, if you continue to use semicolons correctly I will love you.

There are like two people here who don't mess semicolons up.

Heyo,

I currently work in the game's industry as a web developer but I also enjoy making small private games on the side. My most recent project is making a game engine for Silverlight 2 in order to encourage more game development for it.

I'll be around trying to get people to take a look at it and showing off what I've made so far.

Haha, pet peeve? You should get used to it; most people don't really care about grammar.

(I just gave you a semicolon there to show my appreciation.)

Hey everyone! I'm new here, so I'd like to introduce myself... my name is Bob. I live in Minnesota.

I've been making games since I was probably 8 or so. My first game was for the c64 which I wrote in Basic. It was a text-based soccer game called 'Kick'. A choose your own adventure sort of thing, but the only 2 outcomes were that you could score or not score and thus lose the game. I've never had any interest in soccer, so why I decided to make a soccer game, I'll never know?

Here's a screenshot of what Kick was like. For some reason as a kid my imaginary characters were always named after inanimate objects, so that explains Jar...

To this day I'm still memorized by games that leave something to the imagination. As I'm sure we all did as kids, we envision worlds way beyond what is presented on-screen. I LOVE Knytt and Nifflas' other games for that reason! They remind me of my favorite c64 game Below the Root(anyone else think that?). Most big commercial games have really lost that, I feel. There are some that haven't. Ico and Portal are my 2 favorite that I think haven't. On a different not, I have an unnatural infatuation with Ridge Racer games and Super Castlevania 4 on SNES.

Anyway, my little brother and I started a company a few years ago making games. Mostly mobile stuff until recently. We made a mobile port of Call of Duty 2 a little while ago among other things. He programs. I do art and music and such.

Hey Roast, looks like we have a couple of things in common. I love the Ridge Racer series as well (especially Type 4.) Knytt and Ico, they're among my top picks for 'relevant' games of the past generation or so. Nice to meet you.

When it said "Choose username: only used for identiciation by SMF." I thought I could have another nick when posting. But now I'm stuck with dompadidodadollidado. I guess I have to live with that :S

So, I'm a guy from Sweden. Living on a island named Gotland, where I study Game Design and Programming. Rarely play games. When I do it's games like Settlers of Catan or Tetris (in multiplayer). Almost never alone or without alcohol. The fact is that I much more enjoy making them than playing them. If I ever play game for myself I want it to be short, smart and different.

Games I've spent most time on thorugh my life:
Warlords
Civilization
Wolfenstein (demo)
North & South (8bit)
Counter-Strike
Star Craft: Brood Wars
Magic: the Gathering
GTA series
Dawn of the Dead (a WC3 map)
