Hi. This thread is awesome.  Grin

I'm Robert.
Despite the fact that 3D worlds really impress me, to me the best games are the ones where you can count the pixels.  Coffee I grew up with Amiga games. I loved many Amiga games. Dune (not Dune 2) is still one of my favourite games ever. Cannon Fodder was great also, and Worms. The Settlers is the last one I'll mention. Also a big fan of point 'n clicks (especially the Gobliins series).

I loved being creative on the computer, and still do. I started making music, drawing in Deluxe Paint, and later on also programming. I meticulously studied the way computer games were drawn and imitated that in my own pixel drawings. My gfx style is still heavily influenced by Gobliins and The Settlers.

During my 12th year on this planet, I made my first game for the Amiga in AmosPro. It was a simple shoot-em-up. One level was kinda finished, and I was working on a snow/viking level that never finished. I've made two videos of it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfDBPxcGZVk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfOhm8WbWOQ

I also made a little game for the PC when I was about 15. It was a tiny little arcade game where you control this little dude who has to collect as many marijuana leaves as possible. Wink
If you want, you can download it here: http://www.psyview.nl/Dude.rar

Then I got into linux and C, network programming. Made an IRC client of my own, and some other stuff. I also discovered a neat bug in Windows 95. If I sent a specifically crafted TCP/IP packet to my sister's computer over the LAN, it would crash immediately. This was a lot of fun, since only one computer could use the internet, so whenever I needed to use the internet I crashed her computer. Tongue
Made some tiny games during that time as well, like a Nibbles clone and a tree growing tamagochi app.

Anyway, then I started doing HTML, later PHP and MySQL. Made some money on websites.
Then, somewhere this year, I felt the urge to make another game. I had pixeled a little wizard some time ago and wanted to give him a world to walk around in. It's the same wizard as in my avatar. At first I wanted to make it just for Amiga systems, so I did. I released the first version a few months ago.

Then I discovered GLBasic. Since my original code was in BlitzBasic 2, I could use a lot of the old code and make a rewrite for modern systems. Smiley After a while I got interested in the indie community, and started reading Indiegames.com. There I found a link to a devlog on this forum, and I joined.

But my game is no longer just a rewrite, it's way more than the original Amiga version. I've just finished a three-day coding & pixeling spree. And the result, most recent video of my latest game, can be found here:

Hi,

I'm Charly JOUGLET and I'm the lead composer and sound designer of the game: Les rouages de grinn (By EODEGame). As you can imagine, we are french, and we are working on this game since 4 years. We are working so hard for now... The video we sent on http://concours.ganuta.com/103-75-1-Galerie GANUTA (French famouse contest)called: Les rouages de Grinn is one of the first IG video we had shown. This contest is, as you can imagine, very, very important for us... Winning proffesional supports and aids is something we dreamed of when we started this game 4 years ago.

More about me:

I'm 20, I started music 10 years ago. I always dreamed of being composer for video games or something like that... Now I'm^^

I first composed for little games, more like mods... Then I started my firsts games, and now I'm working on Iphone games and MMORPG (Les rouages de Grinn)

The most important part of my work for now is Les Rouages de Grinn, because we are winning a contest called Ganuta, and that's a wonderfull thing! But we need more votes... Indeed, 200 is not enoth if we want to be the best!

Want to listen a little of my work?
--> www.charlyjouglet.com

More about the game:

Les Rouages de Grinn, an interactive MMORPG.

"Les rouages de Grinn" was first thought like a complete world which have its own races, its story, its religious mythology, and its traditions. This universe is based on nowadays norms with well known races.
However the challenge was to revisit these norms by giving them a new meaning. "Les rouages de Grinn" reinvents Elves' story and traits, dwarves and humans of the heroïc-fantasy universe, in a new world.

"Les rouages de Grinn" is primarly an RPG, like a story that the player is living as he wish , through instruments allowing him to interact with the universe. The player will experience an interactive novel which will change depending on him and the other players who will tread the soil of the old world.
"Les rouages de Grinn" doesn't intend to make experience a simple virtual experience, but to propose a story, a world which have its own laws, and where the player could find his place, interact and live like a character in a novel.

How to let the players the control of a virtual world? that's the question we tried to answer like a lot of modern MMO. We didn't necessary found "THE" answer, but a way to perform it.

"Les rouages de Grinn" is a world which have two times, the first, is a huge story which fix bases of the world: the past. The present is the MMO, the era of industrialization, of the capitalization that extends for men and tries to erase thousands of years of tradition. That's when the player is projected in the world, like an unknown who doesn't know anything of his past. This fact allows the player to build his own character, his own identity: A past, a future with his choices, actions with PNJs and other players

The Gameplay of the game is a common base with well known other MMORPG, But new systems are built to guide or propose to players new intruments to interact. The principle of the IS (Interactive Story) comes from that. The player experience a global quest which tells the backgroud of the novel. You could make choices which, couple with others, will influence the rest of the story.

Now, we are participating a contest: Ganuta

We posted a new trailer of the game "Les Rouages De Grinn".
The winner will receive professional help in their project for 6 months, and diffusion in a famous magazine in France.

So we need your votes!!!

Please vote here: http://concours.ganuta.com/103-75-1-Galerie for the video: "Les rouages de grinn"

You gave us 155 votes in 24h! Give us 100 more and we win!

Hello there, I'm Jussi Simpanen, 21 years old finnish graphics artist with a passion for cartoons and games. Ever since I first got my hands on NES controller and Super Mario Bros I've loved pixels and 2D gameplay.

I like 2D games, mainly platformers, rpgs and heavily story based games. While I usually draw highly cartoon styled works with Flash, I've started to train my skills with pixel art. While I can't code at all, I found StencylWorks flash game engine and created my first proper and finished game Dangerous Dungeons.

I am still quite new when it comes to creating games, but I try to learn and improve and I hope to become great game graphics artist!

Hi,

I'm Craig. I've been lurking here for months and I just want to say thank you. To each and every one of you who participate on the forums, and in the indie game scene as a whole.

I've been making games for a long time. Eventually worked in the casual, MMO, and social "genre". The ones I was involved with were basically addictive garbage & made me hate the industry. I became an anti-game addiction activist when I saw the effect some of my decisions & work had on people.

You folks have all reminded me why I wanted to develop games in the first place, and made me excited to be working on one again for the first time in years. /manhug Smiley

*cough cough*

Hi,

I'm Craig. I like turtles, shiny things, and anything that's so stupid it's funny. My favorite game was probably the one that got me started making them - "Unlimited Adventures", way way back in 1993. It let people make their own versions of the D&D goldbox games & must've had at least 1,000 homemade mods released. Introduction posts are scary, bye!

Hey everyone,

My name is Ryan and I just wanted to say this site is awesome! I recently created my own indie studio Eden Industries, and having a site like this where indies can gather is super cool Smiley

In addition to my indie game I'm also working full time at Next Level Games in Vancouver doing programming for Luigi's Mansion 2, so between those two things I'm making games almost every minute that I'm not sleeping!

Anyway I'll probably post more later about the indie game I'm making called Waveform, but for now I just wanted to introduce myself!

Cheers!

Hey guys,

I'm CubinJ (no, not Cuban  Cool) and I'm a game developer. I love art, music, story, and entertainment.
And the thing that brings all these things together is games.

Simply put: I love games.

I'm primarily a jack-in-the-making of two trades:
Pixel Arts and Programming.

Pixel Arts:
I've dabbled a little bit in the area of pixel art - not enough to my satisfaction, but i've gotten a bit too busy with things that I haven't pursued this as far as I would have wished. Outraged

Programming:
I've been playing around with GameMaker for quite a while. I have learned several techniques and created several engines. Recently I've been working more towards platformers and RPGs.

Although when I get the chance, I'd really like to learn some 3D as well.

Some of my works (images are clickable links):

Most of these are my own projects. The only that wasn't is in the lighting engine, from which I borrowed the image from a game I made with Linx and RavenMonkey of the GMC, called Pangea.

If you need help with any pixel art or GameMaker programming, I would be happy to help!

Hi all,

My name is Andy Wood, and I've been a game programmer for about 20 years. Mind you, not a very accomplished one yet, for all that time. Games I have shipped include The Endless Night and Aspetra (adventure / RPGs for DOS, long ago), and Bouncy Maze (simple toy game for iOS, more recently).

I've never worked "in the industry", but I have had a fairly successful career as an application developer, mostly at Microsoft. As a result of that, I've finally been able to return to indie game development, full time. My brother and I (the duo that created Aspetra) are back at it (finally!!), working on a top-down Action RPG. We've been working on it for almost a year.

The game is called Primitive Legend, and it is a fast-action, traditional 2D Action RPG set in a historically semi-accurate Bronze Age world (think Sumer, ancient Mesopotamia). The game features lots of different weapons, enemies, areas, loot, power-ups, bosses, a continuous world that you unlock a little at a time (sort of like Metroid), a cast of main characters, and a real plot with character interaction and development.

Video of the game: http://youtu.be/edIviO3QkMM

What else... I'm extremely into 3D programming from a technical point of view, but I still love 2D games and really wish games would only be 3D when the 3D-ness is really needed for the particular type of game. I am thankful that at least hand-held systems are sort of keeping 2D gaming alive. My favorite games of all time are Final Fantasy IV and VI, Crystalis, Mega Man, Mario, Katamari Damacy, Grand Theft Auto, Chrono Trigger, all 2D Castlevanias and 2D Metroids, and really I could go on and on forever, but those are probably at the top.

Hey all,

My name's Roy.  I've been programming in some form or another for about 20 years.  I'm currently working at the Kennedy Space Center as a Software Engineer as my 9-5.  On the side, I like writing little games to pass the time.  I also own/run http://www.pwned.com.  It's an awesome little community too and I've met some great people, so I really enjoy that.

I've written 3 iPhone games.  After I was done those, I wanted something new so I switched over to XNA.  I'm currently working on a game called AstroMiner and I'm hoping to post a new thread in the Feedback forum sometime this week.  I just released a new build to my small group of testers and as long as nothing major pops up, I'll post the thread.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the site.  ~

Hello everyone,

i registered to this forum some time ago, but only participated passively in discussions. I am Jannik Waschkau and can call me indie developer for some months now. After we won the Gamesauce challenge as one of the 10 Global Game Jam winners with Somyeol2D me and my friends started a business and we are now developing Somyeol for iPhone and Android. I don´t have much experience in game development yet as the only project i participated in before Somyeol was the open source game RaGeTracks, which we never got finished - Somyeol interrupted development - , and some smaller projects for fun.

I am a gamer quite some time now. The first game i was playing was Monkey Island 1, when we got our first personal computer. I love adventure games and rpg´s. In my free time i am also making music and playing the guitar.

Oh and thats me:

Greetz,

Jannik

Hi all,

George asked me to introduce myself so here goes: I'm an active developer in the Interactive Fiction community and a regular of the intfiction.org forums. I've been making games, tools, reviews and blog posts for about four years now. At the moment I'm interested in breaking IF games out of their sandbox (both technologically and conceptually) and combining them with elements from other types of games and from other media than just text.

I can't say that I have more than passing familiarity with the independent gaming scene in general, but I look forward to learning more and having great conversations with the rest of the crowd.

Hello TIG community. I'm Nyhm (a.k.a. Nathan). I'm the sole developer of Island Forge, which has just entered open beta! I'm very exited about it. I've wanted to create an MMORPG since before RPGs were MMO.

There's a lot to take in at this site, but I can already tell it's my kind of community. I love classic RPGs (NES era, both console and computer).

My specialty is Java development (Island Forge is written entirely from scratch in Java). I'm hoping to find some contacts here with similar interests!

Hey,

My name is Max, and I'm a 17 year old Sixth Form student from England. I've been into games since I was very young (my earliest memory was Sonic 2 on the Megadrive I think), and since I was about 5 or 6 years old I had always wanted to make them, but never knew how to start or where to look. I always tried to think of game ideas, and even tried making board games at some stage.

My first introduction to some sort of code was with HTML when I was 9 or 10. When I was 13 I was introduced to Game Maker and I've been hooked on game development ever since. I had a brief stint with web development about a year ago, but I'm back to games again. Fast forward to now, and I'm using C++, OpenGL and SDL to make games. I also use Pascal and Ruby from time to time. I've made many, slightly insane games, including a platformer where vegetables fight each other over soup, a tower defence where you play as a leprechaun throwing rocks at Romans, and most recently, a 3rd person shooter where play as a cat, defending a giant sack of catnip from an army of walking cans of spam (aptly named 'Spambots'). You can find a link to my game at my website (http://supermaximo.com/projects/mr-snugglekins-and-the-giant-sack-of-catnip/). And yes, the game is called Mr Snugglekins and the Giant Sack of Catnip  Tongue

As for games that stood out to me, I don't quite remember much from when I was young other than various Lego PC games and Pokemon on the Game Boy. When I was in my early teens I was very much into Nintendo... I still don't really remember much of what I played other than various Mario games. I also quite liked strategy games. Right now I'm very interested in indie games (I don't remember the last time I played an AAA game...), especially platformers. My favourite games at the moment are Super Meat Boy, Braid, Super Crate Box, VVVVVV, Cave Story, etc. Now that I think about it, I really really do love platformers! Smiley

Other than making and playing games, I like to play the bass guitar and electric guitar, and make chiptune music, although I haven't in a while as programming is currently filling up most of my time, which brings me to my next point...

I'm currently working on a game called Station 6, which is basically a puzzle platformer set on an abandoned space station, where you have to wire up the machines to solve the puzzles. It's also Metroidvania inspired, so there'll be great emphasis on exploration. I'm working on it with a friend who is doing the art and music for the game. I've just started up a development blog for it, which you can see at http://supermaximo.com. I intend to post updates every Friday. I might put up a devlog thread for it on this forum, actually.

I look forward to hanging out with you guys on this forum!
See you around  Grin

Max
