I figured a thread where people recommend good games from a certain genre to each-other could be useful.

I'm often at a loss for good, or at least interesting games in a certain genre; and recommendations are always awesome. I've used the "What are you playing" thread often to get ideas on what games to try, but I need something more specific... and maybe you do to?

Anyway for me: I'm hunting for 2D side-scroller games that are focused on survival, gathering of resources, looting and crafting. Games similar to the recent This War of mine, or Under the Garden/Ocean will do the trick; but preferably not sandbox games. Suggest away!

Magicite is worth a look, though I can't say I liked everything about it. It reminds me a of linear roguelike Terraria.

I'm on the hunt for open world adventure games. Ultima V was lovely. Skyrim was pretty good. WoW would be great if it were single player. Anything else in that vein that's worth playing?

Sid Meier's Pirates

the entire Fallout series

Space Rangers

Gothic (2 is the best, don't bother with Arcania or Risen)

Shadow of Mordor (more action than advenure but very good, biggest surprise of the year for me)

Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead if you don't mind roguelikes
