Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a conflictless dramaless truer to life documentary that contains all the themes of artistic integrity, craftsmanship, and diligence except without the sickening context of gaming culture.
Excellent documentary, but not quite what I was looking for Tongue

Obviously, when I mentioned the Minecraft and Indie Game docs, I was looking for similar game developer documentaries :D

Short but kind of interesting about the making of Solstice.

Also, I know it's not a game documentary. But you should check out degenerate art. It's a good example of an art form that is struggling to be taken seriously, somewhat like gaming. It is about pipe making and it blew my mind

http://www.getlamp.com/

"Rising from side projects at universities and engineering companies, adventure games would describe a place, and then ask what to do next. They presented puzzles, tricks and traps to be overcome. They were filled with suspense, humor and sadness. And they offered a unique type of joy as players discovered how to negotiate the obstacles and think their way to victory. These players have carried their memories of these text adventures to the modern day, and a whole new generation of authors have taken up the torch to present a new set of places to explore.

Get Lamp is a documentary that will tell the story of the creation of these incredible games, in the words of the people who made them."

Free as well. Infocom bonus documentary on dvd is very nice. Also look for the google talk by director.

The people who did the minecraft documentary are currently making a double fine documentary, covering double fine's adventure game project -- http://www.doublefine.com/dfa

They also did a bunch of footage of double fine's game jam / prototype session, amnesia fortnight, which is on the humble bundle site for the next few hours ...

Video Games: The Movie (link goes to Kickstarter fund) looks to be in a similar vein, albeit with less of a focus on indie development and more on the historical and cultural relevance of video games as a whole.

Outside of gaming, some good docs I'd recommend (besides the already mentioned Jiro Dreams of Sushi) are:

Helvetica
These Amazing Shadows
Side By Side
Sound City

I have a ton of other docs in my Netflix queue that I haven't watched yet so I can't say whether they're good.  Tongue

I'll also second the "Masters of Doom" rec and throw in Stephen King's "On Writing" as long as we're talking about books.

You Meet the Nicest People Making Video Games is something that I'm sorta waiting on? His main Kickstarted did not get funded, but he did another one for 2-3k in 2011 that did. As far as I know he's still doing work on it.

The Startup Kids is a documentary on tech startups.

It's not about games, but it's really eye opening because both the tech startups and indie development are very similar to each other. You can rent it on iTunes for 4.99

..... I hear if you purchase Indie Game the Movie super deluxe special edition you also get like 40+ hours of bonus content.

And then theres Design3 http://www.youtube.com/user/design3channel

They interview a bunch of indie devs! Sorta like indie game the movie but on a much smaller scale!
