Casual Vacancy by Rowling. Interesting... not quite what I would have expected from a Harry Potter author.

It was pretty good. First of his that I read. Only picked it up because Goodreads suggested it.

Years ago I read Wheel of Time books until Jordan died. Finished Sanderson's three final ones yesterday since I felt I had to read them since I had already read others. Ending was nice and I suppose that in the end I liked WoT even with its numerous flaws. Not gonna read it again though Tongue

Now reading "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain. After it I might finally check Iain Banks' books.

Right now the Ocean At the End of Lane. It's okay, just solid young adult fiction. Don't know why I expected anything different. I like the name I guess; Neil Gaiman hype?

Before that Sum: Tales of the Afterlives which is great, really interesting short stories about fictional versions of the afterlife, usually with a philosophic bent. First few stories are the highlight though.

& Craig Thompson's Carnet de Voyage. I feel like I want to read more travelogues. Any suggestions?

Iain M. Banks or Iain Banks?

I think his sci-fi is generally at the top of the genre (Iain M. Banks), but his more literary works are just ok in the scheme of all literature (Iain Banks).

So, if you are looking for good sci-fi, I'd say go for it, but if you are looking at his other works, I'd say it'd be ok to skip them.

Yeah, I meant scifi. Didn't know there was that kind of distinction.

I just finished Quiet. It was really interesting book since I consider myself as an introvert. Interesting points about society, being an introvert etc. I recommend to read it in case if anyone is interested in stuff like that. However, it isn't exactly scientific book.

Now I'm reading John Gribbin's The reason why. I bought it on impulse because I loved In search of Schrödinger's cat. I haven't gotten far yet but so far haven't been as impressed.

Just read An Abundance Of Katherines by John Green.
Charming and very amusing. It's about a child prodigy who has dated 19 girls called Katherine and been dumped every single time, he goes on a road trip, tries to make a Theorem to calculate the lifespan of relationships, etc.
Fun book, quite short as well

I quite liked  Iain Banks' non-science fiction book The Wasp Factory, I think it was his first too. I might check out his science fiction stuff, but I'm very picky with science fiction and pretty much just read Harlan Ellison.

I got the anniversary edition of Jeff Noon's Vurt a while back, finally started reading it.

Cool! I just bought a bunch of Jeff Noon books after having finished Vurt and being awed by its originality. Currently reading through Pixel Juice but having a hard time getting through all the short stories. Every story is a new world and a new vocabulary which is both awesome and very tiresome.

Also read through American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Probably one of my favorite Gaiman books.

Yeah, I know.  He uses the M. for his sci-fi works and drops it for his literary works (although a couple of his literary works are borderline sci-fi).  And yeah, The Wasp Factory is good.  I've only read 3 Iain Banks books, and The Wasp Factory is the only one that I would whole-heartedly recommend.

As for his sci-fi:
Culture Novels
Consider Phlebas -- Fine, the major conflict in this gets namechecked a lot, but not essential reading
*The Player of Games -- Fun, but not essential
The State of the Art -- Short story collection and completely skippable
*Use of Weapons -- Probably his best sci-fi novel
Excession -- Slightly below The Player of Games
*Look to Windwards -- Probably 1 notch below Use of Weapons
Matter -- Has interesting ideas that are better examined in one of his other sci-fi books
Surface Detail -- Fine, but not that great
The Hydrogen Sonata -- Probably my least favorite book of his

Other sci-fi
*Inversions -- Quasi-Culture novel.  About a planet that is at ~19th century technology and 2 people from a post-scarcity civilization's interactions with it.  Better than I'm making it sound. 3rd favorite Iain M. Banks book.
*Against a Dark Background -- Fun but slight
*The Algebraist -- Fun, mostly slight, but my second favorite book by him.
*Transition -- An interesting look at a trans-dimensional cabal.

I recommend anything with a star.
