Game Overview:
A top down shooter with the feel and tone of the old resident evil games combined with the gigantic bosses of Ninja Gaiden.

Features (to be changed):
- Giant Bugs and Gigantic bosses.
- Weapons: insecticide, flamethrower (insecticide with a lighter).
- Will make you cry if you hate certain insects. Seriously, if you have a fear of insects do not play this. While asking around, several people flat out told me that if it has an X or and X in it, they won't play it. I don't even understand it. It's virtual.
- Dark and scary environments.
- Anime inspired art.

Bugs Featured:
Rhino Beetle
Stag Beetle
Moth
Centipede

Story:
Something something two brother exterminators and one of them has a daughter. Will determine the daughter's age at a later time.

Concept:
The name is pretty lame. I just googled fear of insects.

About a week before starting my game, I was developing a game design document that was originally a top down zombie shooter. While researching similar games and watching several dozen zombie movies, I noticed that there was an over saturation of zombie media. Additionally, zombie media have become so predictable that I can guess the "horrific zombie event". For example, I guessed correctly  the horrific event in State of Emergency where the second male character says "He was eating his wife."

A couple of days or so later, my coworkers were passing around pictures of spiders and discussing how cute they were. I decided to send them a video of a giant leech eating a worm. NSFW? Not sure. Its purely educational, no nudity, links directly to the BBC Youtube Channel, and there's no blood. But it is pretty disgusting. For some people. Not me. My coworkers got grossed out but it gave me the idea for this game.

Gameplay:
There's a lot of top down zombie shooters so lets say its like that. Since it's my first game, I'm not going to try anything original. There will be some basic stealth and giant boss fights.

Today I finished the camera. The image below demonstrates how the camera moves depending on where you place your cursor. What got me multiple times are strange infinite loops, calculating positions from the CENTER of the screen, and the fact that I was dividing by two rather than four. I hate math.

I also fiddled around with the lighting.

Edit 01/18: No longer in game.

I look at that first shot and I can't help but see some sort of insectoid Baphomet.

I want the player to walk faster. Or did I miss that instruction?

I'll upload a new demo soon (hopefully every 2 weeks) but I increased the walking and dodging speed by one.

Pressing space will allow you to double your speed for 1 second.

Just in case you are curious, here's a screenshot of the guy. Lighting has been turned off.

Here's the final draft of the first level of the hospital stage. Gotta add debris and hospital stuff.

Here is what I hope to accomplish. Three levels in total.

And here is a preview of the hospital boss.
Currently animating it.

Unfortunately, I ran into a ton of sprite tearing (damn floating points) which means that if one sprite tears, I have to move ALL THE SPRITES.

So I had to redo the level using 6-10 large sprites rather than 1000+ little sprites.

Also, I bought Unity Pro so I can get some good shadows.

Right now I'm testing a boss encounter. Why I chose a centipede is beyond me. Nearly a hundred parts to animate individually.

The goal of facing a boss during the level is to give player hints into fighting the boss at the end of the level. For example, the head is the weak spot while the body is shielded by a tough exoskeleton.

I was exhausted last night so I decided to sketch out a title card for the game.

http://i.imgur.com/uIhRjrJ.jpg

The picture behind the main character is a jumping spider. I know that spiders are not insects.

I'm wondering if I'm making my images too big.

Not bad so far!(i may or may not have jumped a few times) I would love to see a story develop and some new bugs. Also a death animation for the bugs besides them just disappearing would be pretty good. ill be following!

Thanks.

The story is slightly evolving. At first, it was a post apocalyptic scenario based on some science articles that I read. Then I realized, convincing players that the oxygen levels of earth suddenly increased which resulted in giant insects was a bit too hard. I also played around with the idea that scientists were genetically modifying insects to improve the earth's food supply. Based on entomophagy

In the end, I think I'm going to formulate a storyline that hints at one or both. Telling the player about the scenario outright sounds insane.

I'll watch some more netflix.

Looking pretty cool!
That's an interesting way of doing the camera movement; wouldn't have thought of doing it like that.
The way I've done camera movement in 2d is to take the player's position and the mouse cursor and then have the camera go to the point in the middle of the two

I'll take that into consideration as another person also suggested that on reddit. I also just realized that I did not update my screenshots.

A level that I'm designing.
I have to make the large wooden table shadows shorter.

A "scare" event:
Animating a centipede with 100 parts is tedious. And that's just half of him.

A preview of the boss prior to the triggered event. Also meant to demonstrate 3d shadows in a 2d world.

Updating first post now.

Sorry for the late reply. I was looking for a way to animate including procedural animation, puppet2d, and the built in unity animator. The only thing feasible for me is the built in animator. I suck at everything else. I'll learn something new in my next game.

As a general update, I have completed the first draft of the introduction level. You get arrive in your trusty truck with your partner (I'm thinking a wife). Your wife heads on ahead while you pay for the parking. Something happens (secret!) and you need to run to city hall without your extermination gear. You'll pick up a gun and a flashlight at city hall.

Massively exhausting week. Trying to hit milestones and marketing my game (passively posting on various threads and sites) while working a part time job and volunteering (my volunteer work is super easy but time consuming) is really bothering me. I had a two week vacation when I made my first prototype but now my job is taking up half my weekly energy.

My parenthetical statements can be deleted (it's how I type because my mind goes on tangents).

I made this gif on a debug level. I used CC0 images to make the hornet.
Hornet head: http://pixabay.com/en/hornet-wasp-insect-close-296088/
Hornet body(Heavily manipulated to hide the fact that it's not the underbelly but the top of the insect): http://pixabay.com/en/hornet-wasp-insect-sting-345654/

Made my first death scene. Jumpscare. Death by hornet. I'm thinking that there are multiple death scenes per insect. Not sure, but when I complete the levels, I should try it out.

The cut scenes will be still images with subtitles.  These images will have a tv camera filter to hide the mistakes in game.

Also, every image under the first post has been turned into a link. Only the last three posts with images will have pictures.

A quick update, I have developed a dialogue system and I finally made the player transition between scenes. The following link is a draft of the dialogue system:

http://gfycat.com/UnhealthyMediocreChrysomelid

I will be changing it based on the following suggestions made in reddit:
1. Text bubble smaller and transparent
2. Lower the effects (less bounce) and have the text stay on for at least two seconds
3. Smaller text.

How most of the text will appear in game:

Let me know if there is anything else you guys would like to add.

I just realized something. Why do I have a gun in an insect based game? My pistol works perfectly, but why do I have it? In good game design, the game mechanics must match the THEME of the game. You are playing as an exterminator. Why don't I use exterminator based mechanics? It's an insect game. Why don't I use bug based mechanics?

I'm saving the gun mechanic for a later game but I deleted most of the weapons, with the exception of the insecticide and flamethrower. Everything else is still the same.

Rather than a top down shooter, this should be a TRAP based game. Essentially, you craft TRAPS and force the bugs to run into them.

I'm buying a case of Monster and will work on this concept throughout the week.

Weapon Mechanics (UNTESTED IDEAS. FOR BRAINSTORMING ONLY)
1. Paper traps: completely immobilizes insects. However, they can still attack if you get too close. Not recommended in hallways or narrow corridors. 1 second delay to place.
2. Bug zapper: A one shot trap that kills insects but expensive to craft.Immediately placement.
3. Repellent: Bugs won't attack you but they will swarm around you. Immediate effect.
4. Pheromone Camouflage: You'll need to kill a bug for this to work but you become invisible to the insect. Kind of like a repellent except they won't acknowledge your existence at all. Immediate effect.
5. Gas bomb: Will slowly kill insects and reduce their speed but will poison you if you get to close. Can be immediately placed but has a delay. Kills nests.
6. Gas bomb (Modified): Will instantly damage insects with a quick flame burst.
7. Insecticide: Slows downs insects and kills them. Like a gas bomb except no gas.
8. Insecticide + Lighter: Repels and damages insects. Kills nests completely.
9. Poisoned food: Distracts bugs and poisons them.
10. Foamer. Like paper traps except that you slow insects down over time and it works instantaneously. However, touching the foam will slow you down as well.

Trap tools:
Flashlight: Does not instantly attracts insects from a distance.
UV Flashlight: Instantly attracts insects from a distance.
UV Flares: Throw to attract and reveal hidden insects.
Food (Gathered from bug meat or other sources): Distracts bugs for X seconds. Will not work if you have been detected. Does not require batteries.

Materials:
Paper
Chemicals
Batteries
Food
Electronics
Container
Lighter

Other stuff:
Bee / wasp suit.
Large environmental traps.

HTML 5 LINK

I redid the mechanics of my game. This is the first example and it worked great. The bad news is the overly complicated nature of these traps. I need to make sure that they don't spawn beyond a wall. I tried spacing out the player but I ended up teleporting him inside the room. WTF. I will have a problem with my current flashlight trigger method as the trigger goes through walls.

8 hours for one trap. Because I had to reorganize the player hierarchy so that the flashlight doesn't trigger the trap. Bleh.
