Hey all,

One thing I've always had trouble with is pixel art backgrounds and I was wondering if I could get some advice on how best to go about doing a background that isn't crap.  Waaagh!

I can throw up an example piece if needed.

As you can see, the background is rather lame. I was wondering how I could make it look good. It's an ocean, but I can't get the shading down pat for it. Any advice?  Concerned

Feel free to make changes to the picture itself if you want, currently it's scaled 200% larger in PS to make it easier to see on here.

Firstly, read this.

And then look at the games that you think got the job done and try to build a background using their screenshot as reference. Pay attention to the use of gradients, it's one way to create aerial perspective.

EDIT:
Okay, of course sometimes it won't apply, but putting it simply:

Thanks for the advice! Once my exams are all over I'll use that info to improve my work.  Smiley
