Hi yall

I'm struggling so badly with this. The project could really use a dedicated artist but, while that doesn't happen, I'll do my best to do the project some justice and bug you people for suggestions and critiques.

So in this world the apple finds itself underground, at the distance there are rocks, roots etc. I'm going for a warm color scheme as this isn't a dark cave, it's upbeat with jazzy tunes and insects reading books and gambling. I don't have much going on, so please SQUINT until you see all that. If you need to squint all the way to eyes closed be my guest, just describe to me what you saw afterwards.

Some good reference points for design might be the cave levels in Yoshi's Island, or Kirby Super Star's "Great Cave Offensive" section.

As for the color scheme alone, here is what I would do:

Its easier/cleaner to do this sort of thing if you save as PNG, by the way.

Thanks for the tips  Coffee I'll look into these references ASAP. I like the bloom effect on your edit, as well as the contrast between the background layers, but the foreground platforms became less visible. One way to solve that would be to add bright corners to these blocks but given my current scheme this is a bit tricky.

True. In Yoshi's Island a crystal texture defines the edges of the ground, as in this screenshot:

Yep. But you know what? as tricky as it is I think it's worth it. These borders also adds a lot of depth. Currently my platforms look very dull.

The reason it's tricky is that my platforms are textured polygons so adding a border means adding an extra strip of polygons with texture. More coding to do.

More playing around. I'm reducing the color palette a bit. I have no idea what I'm doing.

How about this tweak of that?

I like it a lot! I was going to say you made it colder but not really, by making the background colder the foreground became warmer by contrast. I don't know which one I prefer, honestly.
