honestly, i can't really tell what kind of game it is by looking at your screenshot. it's... a bunny? with traps? and lava? uh, alright.
don't get me wrong, it's not bad. it's all pretty readable actually. but that's about it.

Not incredibly appealing. How about tilting the camera angle a little bit so we can get a sense of dimension and see more details of the objects and characters on screen?

I appreciate your critique!
So is it just the lack of dimension that bothers you? There will eventually be a lot more detail. I rather like the flat top-down approach but I see where you're coming from.

It's at this weird place where it's too chaotic to be minimalistic or too empty to be remotely realistic. I don't know how interesting it's going to be when it's perfectly top-down. Ground has that highlighted side so it looks odd that the boxes just sit there like they were on a different plane. I'm glad you're trying something new!

With the flat top-down approach, it actually doesn't read as flat top-down. The animated gifs I've seen of this project had me confused as to whether it was a sidescroller or a top-down game.
I echo the suggestion that you tile the camera a bit.

You could try to avoid using fully desaturated colors with saturated ones. Grey color can have many different tints and such a "tinted grey" will work better with the environment. Well at least in my eyes it will.

I don't know about the ground but the items I could add some more dimension to!

Here's a little revision playing around with adding depth: Thoughts?

Its sure better now. I totally prefer those stylized forms that you have now, especially for crates and wood planks.

The new version w/ depth definitely looks a lot better to me as well. The enemy (the brown rabbit liek thing with horns) looks a little awkward to me though, although it may look much better when it's animated.
