Hello, I posted a week or two ago concerning mentorships that my high school is having our senior class do. Basically, we are to work with/under someone in an industry in which we are interested. As there is nobody who does game development of any sort in the immediate area, the administration at my school finally relented and is allowing me to do this over the intarwebz. I'm not sure what kind of people you TIGers are; I'm under the impression that there's all sorts of people here, from people actively in the industry (developing Flash, iPhone, or other games) to hobbyists and fans in general. It'd be best if I could get something with the former.
For my purposes, the mentorship would be nothing more than regular correspondence regarding whatever tasks you might request of me. I can do Python/pygame, Java, Flash/AS3, a little C++, Ruby, a little 3d modeling in Blender, web scripting/programming (XHTML/CSS/JS/PHP) and I have rudimentary knowledge of other technologies/languages. As for game development, I've only written text adventures, pong clones, shovelware Flash games, and I'm currently working on a shmup:
http://www.bowlofnoodles.com/dekiru.html. I've played violin since the 4th grade but in the past few years I have been doing electro and chipmusic. In any case, ideally I would be "challenged" with whatever work is presented to me, I would have questions answered by the mentor, and I would review progress I've made with the mentor. It would be a bonus if I came to understand aspects of the business through this. Each day, the mentor would need to write maybe a few sentences or so of the day's duties and observations.
The mentorship is from March 2 to April 23. The total amount of work on my part (be it given to me by the mentor or otherwise) should be about 4 hours per week (though I'd be willing to put in extra time). If anybody has a little extra time and would be willing to be my mentor, I would be incredibly deeply obliged.
I'm sorry if this didn't make a lot of sense; but if any potential mentors would PM me I'll try to clear things up. Thanks everyone for your time and consideration.
