Technology has advanced, and a new world of information has been revealed. Mankind knows it as the internet, but locals know it as Hypt. A world that is now overrun by viruses, trojans, and other forms of malware. Take control of a revolutionary new anti-malware program and explore a vibrant and labyrinthine digital world. Get to the end of each level, equipped with nothing except the ability to turn the virus' deadly powers against them. Take back the digital world in this stylized but lethal test of skill against dozens of levels, hundreds of enemies, and difficult bosses.

EmpI Studios presents its debut in game development with the Indie title, the action arcade game Hypt. Developed over 7 months by one guy in Unity because he could.

The primary game mechanic in Hypt is reflection. You move about in a 2D plane from a top-down perspective. Enemies fire projectiles to block your path. Enemy projectiles bounce off your shield, and using it you can knock incoming shots away, or towards enemies and defeat them with their own powers. Take heed, however, your shield is not the only thing projectiles can bounce off of, and if the player is hit once, they have to restart.

Hypt will be available for PC, on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Currently the game is in open beta. Most of everything is completed, all that is left is gameplay fixes, some bug tweaks, and some level balance fixes.

Hypt features all of the following...

  • 120 Challenging Levels
120 Levels Hand-Built by me, no procedurally generated terrain. 30 Levels divided into four zones.
  • 4 Difficult Bosses
At the 30th level of each Zone is a boss battle that takes everything you have learned and puts it to the test. Be wary, not every projectiles can be bounced by your shield.
  • Original Soundtrack by the talented Efe Tozan
You will be rockin' through the digital world of Hypt to the sound of my custom soundtrack composed by this talented musician.
  • Incredible Enemy Variety
Even if some enemies are similar, the way they mix with each other and attack you will require you to constantly revise your strategy level-per-level.
  • 3-4 Hours of Gameplay
At about a minute-two minutes to complete each level, this is a game that will keep you entertained for hours on end, with an auto-save and a level-selection feature that lets you quit the game and pick up at the level you left off at any time.
  • Gorgeous Worlds and Digital Environments
Hypt has an aesthetic similar to Tron and Geometry Wars.
  • Fluid 2D Top-Down Movement
Controls are responsive and the shield moves just the way it should.

Some enemies are tricky

One note worth noticing: The player's shield in these gifs are black, while the shield on the screenshots are very light blue, almost white. Which do you guys think looks better?

Try white outlined in black so it will always be visible.  Wink

I REALLY don't have much confidence in toon shaders  Shrug

But with a bit of experimentation, applying a gradient with a faint black outline appears to do the trick.
