For me, often, when a game has a way to exploit the mechanics to progress in the game, I quickly start loosing interest. I start feeling like there's no point in playing the 'proper' way if the exploit is more efficient.

Rewarding player ingenuity/creativity is part of the reason why we play games. I don't call that "breaking the game" as the game rules should allow for it as much as possible.
