Best ending ever: Bad Dudes.

The president likes hamburgers? WHAT A TWIST!
If you like twists, you should play No More Heros.

I liked SotC's ending as well, just because it left so much to the imagination (unless I'm just dense and missed the point).

did you play ico?

Yup.

Notice anything odd about the baby in the ending of SotC?

The end of Bonk's Adventure always seemed kind of dreamy.  I'm pointing it out though because I like games that end with the "cast" of enemies.

Spoilers I guess:

The ending of SotC is pretty bittersweet implications when you think of the lives of the surviving characters alone in that desolate ruin.

I haven't played that one, but I finished The Sands of Time last week and I must say I quite enjoyed the ending (and a lot of what lead up to it).

YES! YES!

That's yet another reason why I love Super Mario World. :D

One of my favourite game endings was Shenmue 2. Well, okay, it had the start of a new chapter, but it took place in a completely different location; I still remember how it was to walk down those pathways with flowers either side.  It also came with an opening-up of the narrative, beautiful hints of what was to come in the next game.
I finished Shenmue 2 recently and I am going to have to second this, it was just so peaceful walking through the mountains and forests, it felt very soothing. And it wasn't just a small scene, that was huge, it took me a whole afternoon to finish it. Sadly, I don't believe we'll see another Shenmue 3 in the future. Sigh.

And any Kojima game always delivers a good ending for me: Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3 and Snatcher. They were all good games by the way, not just the endings.

Mother 3 was also pretty emotional and deserves a mention here.

Metal Slug 2(?), I'm not sure which of the titles was it, but the one where in the end we ally ourselves with our enemies to destroy the alien invaders, and then that guy flies into the spaceship's main weapon to saves us all (just like in the Independence Day movie). That was a great ending, it cracked me up.

Or how about the ending of "Zero Wing" - SPOILER: a line of anthropomorphic grapes dancing across the screen - the perfect end to the Japanese shmup that brought you the phrase "All your base are belong to us", IMO.  Corny Laugh

You have to burn the rope? The whole game is basically a frame for that song.

On that note: Earthworm Jim, anyone?

I'd always wondered what "Cow Launched" meant in the first level.

When I was a kid I loved Earthbound's ending because it allowed you to walk around the entire world and talk to everybody and they would have new things to say.

In contrast to that Mother 3 kicked you out almost immediately, though they did let you walk around at THE END and hear people talk.  At first I was annoyed that i didn't get to explore the world like in Earthbound but I think ultimately going the non-escapist route benefits the game (and games in general, especially as an artistic medium) more.  Now I wish that they didn't even have to do the whole walking around in the dark part.

I realised ages ago that the best way to end a game is with a really good song. Like You Have To Burn the Rope, God Hand, Portal and so on. The ending music is like the most important music in a game imo.

I think SMW has like my favorite ending ever because of the music- such an awesome track. It never fails to make me feel nostalgic when I finish the game.

I also really liked Zelda: A Link to the Past's ending theme. When I finished it for the first time as a kid, it made me feel like an epic saga had drawn to a close.

SPOILER: a line of anthropomorphic grapes dancing across the screen

I feel extremely compelled to play through Zero Wing, now.
