It was created with a small set of hand painted brushes that are drawn in layers. Each cell has random offset and hue/saturation/brightness. Still looking for ways to improve it, maybe I'll try storing some depth information to apply animated fog or something like that. Any suggestions?

In terms of colour and texture, it's really good, but I'd say it's too cluttered. It needs some open spaces to varying sizes so the eye/brain can build a mental map of the area.

It's pretty, but I agree that it needs more open spaces. Depending on what you're using it for, you may want to more clearly define the landmass too, which would make the similar tiles more clumpy in a logical way, like a real landscape.

I got some pretty good results last time I was looking at this with the approach used here: http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~amitp/game-programming/polygon-map-generation/
