When is the ideal time to start sending press kits to the media if you are heading to a crowdfunding platform?

Before the campaign to create initial visibility and start building your pre-crowd? On day 1 of the campaign? After you have hit x amount of your goal?

Any thoughts on this?

I always like getting a heads up before the campaign launches, that way we have material ready the day of the campaign.  We generally won't post anything more than a news blurb until the developers has a draft of their campaign, but having other items ready is great.

I'm sure those that have run campaigns will provide more in-depth answers, but I can say that holding off until several days into your campaign is the kiss of death.  Many devs seem to do a couple pre-campaign notifications, a big push the day the campaign begins, updates at certain milestones (big campaign updates, hitting certain funding goals, etc), and another push in the last week or so.

Ok cool thanks. Also how much content would you be looking for in this? Is a trailer / teaser necessary? Are there any key points that must/should be touched upon?

Is a trailer / teaser necessary?

Absolutely. You will need one for crowdfunding anyways so might as well share that with the media. A trailer will sell your game to the press without them needing to go read about it, research, or play it. It's the key to your presentation. They will know in a matter of moments if your game is worth covering or not. They hate wasting time. They get a lot of emails. If you don't send a trailer to talk about your game, they may not read too far...

If you're worried your trailer can't sell your idea to the media, then you have bigger issues to worry about.
