Hi everyone, first post, long time lurker. These are some games I enjoyed enough to complete, so what else would you recommend? I like things that are fun to play with polish and character and bearable writing, genre and year and indie quotient don't matter, and I have a reasonable mac/win desktop with emulators and a gamepad. I probably don't want to spend 40 hours unless the quality is stellar, and I don't particularly want to play online or multiplayer. The genres below are just a loose classification.
RPG: Chrono Trigger Ultima 6 & 7 FF7
First Person: Portal Deus Ex Thief 1 & 2 Metal Gear Solid Metroid Prime
Action RPG: Zelda LTTP Dungeon Master & Chaos Strikes Back Legend of Grimrock 1 & 2 Bastion Binding of Isaac Star Control 2 / UQM
Platform: Super Mario World Yoshi's Island Spelunky Red Rogue
Metroidvania: Super Metroid Castlevania SotN Cave Story La Mulana Terraria
Roguelike: Brogue Nethack Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup Dungeons of Dredmor
RTS: Dune 2 Starcraft
Tower Defense: Plants vs. Zombies
One More Turn: Civilization I-IV
Puzzle: Desktop Dungeons Braid
Text: Zork etc.
Anyway, thanks if you can help.

Given that list, some of the more obvious games would be like Portal 2 and Transistor.
I'd also suggest Battleblock theater. One of my favorite platformers ever!

Okay, I didn't like Portal 2 so much (despite finishing it), but I didn't know or forgot about Transistor - I loved Bastion. Battleblock theater looks fun too. Awesome!

Sweet Home.
Ohhh yeah. This game is the granddaddy of survival horror, and definitely a vital, often-overlooked part of gaming history.

I couldn't have said it better. It's my favorite NES RPG (Even Mother is 2nd to it)

Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is really good and on the cheap side.
You need to play it with a gamepad but you said you had one so I don't think that will be a problem.

Varicella & Blue Chairs, interactive fiction. Excellent writing and world building in both.

Maybe try Why am I dead game series. Need patience though, RPG mystery format. I just got started, still need to figure out a few things, 'cause not very good at this format yet, mainly platforms in past. Not much of a detective either. But see some others have figured it out, so will stick with it.

Platformers (1 goes up, the other down):
TowerClimb Probability 0
I second Tales of Maj'Eyal, pretty fun. (edit: and FTL too, brilliant game)

I really have to second Towerclimb and Probability 0. Opposites in many ways, but both fantastic.

For RTS: The Ground Control series is heavily underrated... the first one was absolutely brilliant and I still have fond memories of reading the massive manual back to back. There was a newer one, Ground Control 2 which was good but still felt like it didn't have as much depth.
