The end already came long ago with Ren'Py. I doubt TyranoBuilder will make any difference.

RPG Maker originates from 1992, with Western popularization happening around 2000. It never did any harm and didn't attract much mainstream attention in the West until recently when Steam started accepting garbage. It's an issue with Steam, not RPG Maker.

I don't think Visual Novels will make a return until the engines give the option to port to consoles.

Ha, this is actually something I thought would be fun to do solely for Android as a pet project... if you really wanted serious reach, though, it seems like writing an engine in Unity would be the way to hit virtually any platform. Good visual novels and related games do often have a whole lot of features, but rarely are any of them really substantial technical challenges, even when they end up being minigames.

I like the idea of people being able to make visual novels quickly and easily. I've played around with Twine a bit, and had a pretty good time of it. Interactive fiction can be great, when handled properly. And having better, easier tools for implementing it is in the best interests of the genre. It makes it more accessible to more creators, and empowers them to practice their craft with much less of an up-front learning curve.

I'm glad that they've launched something like TyranoBuilder, and I think the price they are asking is very reasonable. I won't be trying it immediately myself. I'm already deep into a Unity project, and I have a copy of RPG Maker already languishing in my Steam library. My game creation options runneth-over.
