Hi all,

Something that's got me thinking lately is the 3D platform game, working on one currently (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-qShd1Qe2r7NY7E1PGuJbA) I would like to know what your views are on its popularity, say, compared to the 90s. There are still great platformers out there but they they sometimes seem to be shadowed by more mature games.

All thoughts welcome Smiley

In my opinion the industry NEEDS 3D platformers. There are not enough games nowadays for kids to play and really enjoy, and 3D platformer is just the best video game genre in this case. And speaking of grown-ups, I feel that the n64/playstation1 nostalgia is at its peak now, so a lot of gamers would be very glad to play a new great 3D platformer game.

Totally agree, that's what is fuelling me to make a 3D platformer. I feel we need more of these games, as growing up in the 90s these are what have helped influence me in a positive way to be creative and a designer.

I have definitely noticed a rise in nostalgic value with older generation games. I'm yet to see something with the gameplay of a classic 90s 3D platformer which also utilises the capabilities of the latest generation consoles.

There are at least three cool ones that have been in the works here on TIGS recently, altho I realise now that I haven't heard from any of them for quite some time now... What happened?

Please do add your game to the mix!

Sure thing, not sure where it's going yet, but it's called ASCENT and is a co-op 3D platformer still in its concept stages, I also have someone on board to produce the soundtrack, been in the works for a few months!

Get control and camera real good before anything else, the bar is quite high for that already, pay attention to ledge transition from moving to falling, collision there can make or break a game.

Disclaimer: I have a 3D platformer project, still not out of prototype as long these problem aren't solved.

Yeah I second Gimym. Camera issues are what kill 3d platformers, today, yesterday, and tomorrow. Crisp controls are of equal concern... All in all I suspect the extreme difficulty in that mixed with the usually higher amount of development cost for these kinds of games further mixed with the fact the entire genre is not hot at the moment means very little development in this genre.

Not to say you shouldn't, that's my 2 cents of why we don't see many and why Gimym is so damn correct with his assessment Smiley

It's "not hot" because nobody is making it and they're not making it because "it's not hot". Lips Sealed

Let's hope for Playtonic to change their minds.

Camera control is definitely a much bigger issue now, for example if I take one of my favourites like Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, it had fun gameplay, a great soundtrack, but the response of the camera would slow down progress. Nostalgic value overcomes this issue, but playing an old platformer I'd never played before, that had similar camera issues would be more off-putting.

I suppose fixed first/third-person cameras are just much easier to work with...

I'd like to see someone use vr for doing a 3d platform using stereoscopic perception of depth, instead of using vr just for first person immersion

Took the time to dig up the other three games I was thinking of…

Spooky Poo's Happy Hell was recently successfully funded on Kickstarter.

Clive 'N' Wrench seems to be progressing well.

I give up on finding the third one. I've looked through 40 pages of the devlog forum and tried to search but I can't find it. I'm pretty sure it started with P or Po-, poporo kinda name, but not that. It's not Pongo. It's a guy with a hat running around in pretty open platformer worlds. They had a trailer with great music. Where is it??!??

The silent criticism I immediately see is how unstructured and cluttered level design is ...

Thanks! I guess I must've missed it then, because January was slightly before page 40. But it's still realllly far back. Devlog forums moving so fast these days. It's scary. And 3000 submissions for Ludum Dare. Where did all the indies come from?!

Oh, wow, I was just reminded about Hat in time… That was all the rage when it was on KS. I haven't heard a word in like a year. What happened?
