I use Steam reviews to gauge how well a game is doing. Example, a small indie game has 30 reviews on Steam, let's say 80% positivity, I think "ouch... not so good", because I try to get sales number from that. But I don't know what the average (if anyone knows) amount of reviews-per-customer there is.

30 reviews of the game, but maybe 500 people bought it. Maybe only 50 bought it etc.

Anyone have a general idea of this? I know this is different for AAA games, so let's say indie games with between 50 to 350 reviews.

If you're after number of copies sold, check out SteamSpy instead.  It's not perfect, and you have no idea where the copy of the game came from, but it's better than trying to extrapolate review information.

Thanks! Very helpful information... gave me quite a bit of confidence.

I have heard from more than one source that "number of reviews * 100 = number of sales" is a good formula.

That formula is a bit off for my game's Steam sales. It has 552 reviews and has sold 156,124 units to date on Steam. That SteamSpy site is pretty close with 161,693 so I'd say it's a reasonably accurate resource for estimated sales.

Maybe because that's an impressive number of sales, and way off the charts in comparision to a normal indie release these days.

But yeah, SteamSpy is the way to go.

SteamSpy should be reasonably reliable as long as there wasn't a free weekend (if there was then values will be way off for that game because of people who logged in during the weekend but didn't log in after it finished).

Reviews/sales ratio varies too much per game and genre to be used as reliable data unless you look for a very broad ballpark. It can go from 30 to 120 sales per review and then stuff like Humble Bundle can throw those numbers off even more. Better use SteamSpy.
