i think the distinction he makes between settings and concepts is a bit flimsy

I think he means concepts more as literary themes more than anything else. While settings deal with the world that the games are placed in.

but what i mean is, settings are just a different way of exploring themes. if he's trying to say that most games are thematically shallow then ok, fair enough. but that's because game developers are shit writers mired in 2nd hand cliches not b/c the focus is on "worldbuilding". for example The player traverses a world where certain concepts are encountered, but these concepts are by no means the focus and you can go through the game ignoring them and still have an engaging experience. this is just a poor argument imo. you can enjoy most anything without thinking about the underlying themes.

Yeah I pretty much agree with you, this is kinda just a rant by this guy saying he wants more games focused on themes.
Now I feel bad for posting it lol.

haha no need to feel bad. you just posted an article and i argued against some points in it. im not, like, mad that you posted it and i dont think its complete trash or anything. EDIT: re-reading it i think i misunderstood him a bit. i think what hes saying is basically that we place too much emphasis on making settings "immersive" and "fun" and not enough on actually doing interesting stuff with them. so e.g. in a game like deus ex certain themes are present but theyre not really explored to their fullest extent b/c they take a backseat to the "gamey" aspect of the world.

Also metal gear V e3 open on the concept of language as "nation" Her doesn't mention metal gear, they always presented concept first past solid 1 And most discussion about mgs revolve around concept (gene, meme, scene, what not to pass, lexeme) all variation around the concept of identity

"no see our games don't use trite rpg cliches, we actually use these even older and triter cliches because our audience is literally too dumb to understand anything else!"

If bioware were to make mgs V with the theme of hate and using the motif of language, they would go make a high polish but without insight second grade grade dissertation about langage as a weapon using insult as a guideline.
Kojima would go language >>> nation >>> identity >>> the other >>> misunderstanding >>> lingua franca >>> loss of roots >>> existentialism >>> hate!
That would only the first paragraph of the thesis, not even the whole dissertation.

In fact most people treat game as "vanitas" painting, standard theme to explored structure (gameplay)
