So a couple months ago I got hooked on the New Retro Wave craze as a sort of passing thing. The only reason I jumped off for a moment was because I ended up focusing on other work. But now I'm back, and ready to take action! I was wondering if anyone here may be familiar with this 80s throwback style of music and what kind of instruments are used for it. If anyone knows how to make the synths in massive, I would also appreciate the information.

This is some examples:

I suppose another example would be some of the music made by Vince DiCola during the 80s (The Transformers Movie, Rocky IV, etc..).

What sounds are you trying to reproduce, exactly? Because I think your synth and drum sounds already sound like something in an 80s new wave track (at least to my ears). Massive should be perfectly capable of all those big fat synth sounds. I think what your songs lack is the energy in the rhythm and melody that your examples have.

I would suggest a few things. for drums, Number 1 is absolutely battery. I can't stress that enough. Battery is full of 80s samples. As far as synth goes, Sytrus(If you are using flstudio). It has a TON of 80s style pad synths that are useful for this genre. Fm8 is a must as well as Absynth. My advice? Lots of reverb and don't leave out the signature Sax hahaha. Here is an example of an 80's piece I did using those synths.

I also recommend SQ8L and Dexed. Dexed especially. It's a very nice FM Synthesizer and it's free.

SunVox. It's free and you're welcome, and you'll love it.

I am really into that music too, and I plan on releasing another EP with that style this year.

For drums, Linn Drums Samples are great and you can find them within NI Battery. Also there are plenty of rips from old drum machines that you can find online too.

For those add reverb then a gate and you have a really good sound. Native instruments RC 24 is great for that reverb sound.

As for synth sounds, if you learn you can really learn to emulate those with any decent soft synth. But if you are like me and you like to flip through great presets than this is great http://tal-software.com/products/tal-u-no-62 (free) and a step up this http://tal-software.com/products/tal-u-no-lx (60$) and my favorite (although now that I am on a Mac its not as easy) is this http://www.sonicprojects.ch/opxpro2/description.html ( €85 )

It really has some amazing sounds that fit perfectly with that genre!

I put this up the other day.

And a while ago I did an OST that had a good 80's vibe as well.

Good luck!
