Hey guys,

so I'm working on a tilebased game set in the desert/savannah.
While I've already found a fitting desert ground tile, I'm still struggling to decide on which tile I should choose to be the tile for solid ground Undecided .

In this game travel speed and supply management will be really important.
That's why it must be easy to recognize and distinguish the two ground types, desert and (normal) solid ground.
As you'll need more time and supplies to pass through a desert.

So, here's the mockup with the desert tile:

And here are my three suggestions for a normal ground tile:

1) At first I was very happy with this one but I thinks it makes the picture to noisy (?)

2) This one has a good contrast to the lighter desert tile but it's relatively simple

3) This one looks like very dry ground but it lacks contrast

Despite the things I wrote I like all three very much but I just can't decide which one to use.

So what do you guys think?

PS: general suggestions to the art style are welcome Smiley
PPS: not a native speaker, so excuse my english

Maybe number 3, but with slightly darker colours?

The third one looks the most desert-y, but it lacks variation and contrast. Could be much worse though, and I don't think you want to draw too much attention to it anyway. Honestly however, I prefer how it looks in the mock-up.

I think 2 looks best.

2 is pretty nice and gentle on the eye, the others may be too contrasting in their patterns and hurt my eyes a little.

I hope it helps

Thanks for all your answers Smiley

I decided to take the second one and the last two answers just confirmed my decision!
But I changed it a little bit by making the light patches smaller, the difference shouldn't be too noticeable but it makes the whole ground a little bit darker:

I like the latest design. The rock pattern looks nice.

It's still quite close to your original wavy desert pattern, though. I could see people getting them mixed up quite easily as the colours are the same.

I know you arent really asking for this, but since your textures get lost a bit in a few of my callibrated monitors, I think you need to overall bump contrast a bit, and increase the saturation/hue range on the sprites
