Does it bother anyone else to see promotional trailers and art that look nothing like the actual gameplay? Undecided

Check this out, guys.

And this is the actual gameplay footage:

I understand the concept of raising the hype meter but...that's just overkill imo. Crazy Why are cinematic trailers released if they don't present the legit gameplay experience? It might produce the desired hype effect for some, but for people like me it's a little disappointing to see the actual gameplay later on. Cry

By the way, I'm not putting Maple Story down at all. All things considered, I think the graphics are absolutely adorable. Tongue

that's what i have seen on tv and on subway tv lately prior to maple story 2 release:

  no gameplay at all.

kind of reminds me of all the Clash of Clans ads. and now that i think about it.

I've never seen a game ad with actual gameplay on it.

So i guess that most of promotional trailers are meant for broadcasting ads.... they aren't meant to incite gamers to play their game. It's just focused on a different public.

I personally don't have a problem with CGI as long as it gives the same impression of feel as you get in the game. For example Assassins Creed has CGI that shows you stalking a target, stabbing him in a slick way and free-running away. Ok it's CGI and not the in game graphics but at least it gives you a feel for how the game plays.

The problem I have with this is it so detached from how the gameplay looks! We have high octane action and a driving beat. The actual gameplay is akin to Isometric and cute. The real shame is the actual game doesn't look that bad but I wonder if this is going to hurt sales rather than improve them as people realise that this isn't what the game is about.

ya it sucks, but AAA game trailers that DO show gameplay are usually not much better. you see a bunch of 5 second snippets of "gameplay" stuck together, usually with the hud disabled and camera angles no one would use in the actual game.

worse trailers ad are those of this kind:

it's a mobile game , you see nothing at all of the game.

And rehearsed "live-gameplay" featuring a conveniently diverse set of actors real hardcore gamerz

Check this one out, it actually made me laugh when I switch from promo video to gameplay video

I don`t see any sense in making this cinematic trailer in this particular example.
In my opinion, a lot of standalone cinematic trailers are just a waste of money.

trailers are just for building hype. standalone cinematic trailers are probably meant to go viral more than anything.

That's marketing! It's weird, but dedicated gamers know to look for gameplay. The big studios try and blur the line with scripted in game cinematics. It's the way of things, especially popular art. I don't think it applies to just games.

...

always has bothered me. I preferred to pretend a game was way better than its actual merit after playing, and not playing it based on marketability.

Yea, that's true. It's actually kind of funny when movie trailers include scenes that aren't actually in the movie.

The point of the cinematic trailer is to capture the feel of the game.

I say this completely unironically, but I would /gladly/ take something that looked like Doom over the HRR DRR LET'S BARF SHADERS AND REFLECTIONS AND WEIRD LIGHTING HORSESHIT EVERWHERE.

Wow, I'm surprised Starcraft/Starcraft II are not in the Top 10. Diablo 3? Weird stuff.
