Lone Survivor only indirectly inspired me in that it showed me there's such a thing as too much visual distortion.
Other than that, no.
I was inspired by various music for the story and atmosphere.

In response to multiple composers contacting me about working on this project, I've finished and released the OST of the game, so there's no more confusion.

Small update.
I've finished player attacks.
Now I'm making portraits, until I'm ready to program enemy AI.

It's going to be very complicated, so I figured I'd take a break by doing something simple.

It took about three years, I think.
I'm glad you think it's fitting, I was worried people would find it awful and/or annoying.
I guess that's still a possibility.

I'm really enjoying the mash-up of technical effects with magical effects. Also, this might be a small thing to focus on, but from the gifs the camera movement is looking really good. It's such an important part of platforming-type games.

Thank you!
I learned a lot about cinematic camera placement from working on one of my previous games, Remnance.
I'm happy to see that my efforts with it aren't unnoticed.

I'm considering overhauling the current graphics, to better fit the mood of the game.

The problem is that it'd be a big undertaking and I'm trying to gauge if it's worth it or not.
Any thoughts?

I think the new sprites with less colours look better overall, but in the gif the contrast seem a bit to high. I'd go for the colour change at least for characters, They look simpler but better lit. That's just my taste though.

I value your input; thank you!
I've finally gone through the 1,176 images that currently exist in the game, and the new style is cemented.
I, personally, think it's for the better, but that may be debatable.
I think I just need brighter backgrounds, but that can easily be accomplished by removing the step of darkening backgrounds to stand out from the foreground.

But for now, here's some new stuff, including the new art style, text parsing, and an unnecessarily complicated effect for outlining whoever is speaking.

The text parser has the ability to scroll new lines past the limit of 5 by deleting the first lines, it's just not shown in this gif.

Next is enemies.
I promise I won't get sucked down another rabbit hole before then.

Thank you all for your feedback and support.   Cool Toast Right

Here's some combat so far.

I'll have to refine it and make it flashier still.
But it exists now.
I'm excited.

Yes!
I've been making a lot of progress.
I just wanted to avoid doing more than a triple post in this thread,
because at that point I'd clearly be sharing where there is no interest.
I update on Twitter, still, though.

I've finished the tiling and room layout for the overworld of chapter I.
As well as menus.

I've been working on enemies, AI, and pathfinding.
That "0" is a debug thing to test pathing.

As seen here.

I have to fix this hitbox.

That's all for right now.

This has a really cool aesthetic- especially the digital/ghostly effects on the spells- very unique.  Gameplay looks really solid too - I like that melee counter especially.  Rake Souls hype?

Hello,

The graphic style of this game is fantastic and the effects are very cool (the filters, the colors, the ghostly magic, the text).
Not only that, but the soundtrack is so fitting. "Change" and "Under no Sky" were my favorites songs.

Also, I know it probably has absolutely nothing to do with it, but the game reminds me of that snes game "Batman Forever", I think it's because of the atmosphere and the characters. I used to play that a lot back in the day.

I followed on twitter in case you no longer update things here. You also posted a lot of good stuff there!

Last but not least, good luck with your game! I'd certainly buy it.
