you could get away with fewer colors

a good rule of thumb when shading, also:
colors that are darker tend to appear more blue, colors that are brighter tend to appear more yellow.

I've altered your sprite a little bit so you can see what I'm talking about.



Also I'd recommend getting a better program to do pixelart with.
I highly suggest GraphicsGale, but Paint.NET will also work fine.

Tried to edit it based on what you said but keep the same feel. Hopefully a good compromise:
