there's a bunch of crud i want to fix about this guy's texture (mostly that godawful belt) but this will do for the time being. this npc is v excited to meet you.  I wasn't planning on sleeping anyways.

It seems like you could use another shade of darkness for their textures - the neck area on the guy is an example. The last animation of him doing a whirlwind is awesome, but he seems to fall at the end, rather than be 'carried along' by his sword (it's like he's losing control over it).
The girl's running animation's also good, but it looks like skipping to me, rather than running (if it's skipping, then mission accomplished!). If it's supposed to be running, then I would recommend rotating her chest down and keeping her head level, and pumping her arms closer to her face. Anyway, very nice animations!

Be sure to play some tribes and quake in the spirit of preparing too.  Check out polycount for some more 3d stuff, and make sure to get your head around all of the basics before the date rolls up: modelling, texturing, rigging, animating, and getting the result ingame.

Thanks for the ref! I didn't know about that place  It is incredibly daunting how much I have ahead of me. I understand all these things pretty well individually & conceptually but I've never actually applied any of this stuff. Oh well, I can always fall back on to billboarding if I can't get up to snuff in time. Oh, and, yes, there has been much Tribes playing  In fact I was just playing it. I should play Quake too! Which reminds me that I wanted to try out Nexuiz as well.

The sad thing about getting a workflow together is that it takes a shitload of repetition. Hope you can get into the flow of things before its time to start "production".
No worries for the ref, that place is full of awessome. Makes me aware of how much of a newbie I am when it comes to art - same with ConceptArt.org :/

Yes, totally. Went through some stuff there on normal and color maps, so going to start on that now. I think that's pretty important and I've never done those before. Tried making a UV map of the gun I just made. Terrible idea!  Going to start with something way simpler and work my way up.

Nexuiz got discontinued/abandoned because of I guess something to do with that commercial console version? The project lives on as Xonitic though so it's all good.

@Jack I wouldn't get too excited about normal mapping or whatever at this point, just focus on getting some form of 3D asset into an engine, so you can make your FPS.
