By far the most depressing MMO there is... well, outside of Second Life, maybe.

Maybe.

Well I have an idea for an MMO.
You'll need enough money to fill a college swimming pool just to get off the ground and a private transport ship that can fly you between your base of operations on Earth and the other one you keep on Neptune because that's what it takes to make your MMO. -g[don'tsuemebunny].net veteran community technical guru 10million points rep

since the site launch at least  9/10 threads in the help wanted/announcements areas (at least back around 2002-2005 when i used to frequent it) were someone with an "awesome" idea for a new mmo looking for help making it where they'd do the design and supply the idea and the other people would program it and do the art, for a revenue split of 50/50 of course. I have no idea if it's still as bad but after world of warcraft launch TONS of people wanted to make a mmo as their first game so the boards were just littered with help wanteds like that and "how do i make a mmo" like questions on the boards.

There's two parts to the joke (and this is barely a joke):

1. As noted, there were a looooooooot of posters on there at one point wanting to make MMOs. This was pre-Minecraft, when normal MMOs were still relevant.

2. Like 90% of the posters there started their posts with the word "Well" for no reason. Or every goddamn paragraph sometimes. So you'd get posts like "Well I wanted to make an MMO. Well I'm not too experienced in programming but I want to learn more about it. Well I'm going to need to do art to."

End result being the really marked and unnatural "speech" pattern that I've not really encountered elsewhere. Or at least not to that extent.

redditors use the words "heavily" and "significantly" all the time for some reason. u could say their use of these words is significantly heavy (badum tish).

I wonder if longtime tigs posters collectively developed some distinct annoying diction that we don't even notice and it's super grating to outsiders!

Yes, the 2005 website design.

Gamedev.net for a long while had a singular FAQ, and they have a rather funny answer to the "I wanna make an MMO" which lead to a wikipedia article about stockholm syndrome or something like that. There was a CONSTANT insistance upon the idea that making an MMO was literally impossible for a singular person or even a decently dedicated group, and they were pretty aggressively against anyone trying to make one. (With plenty good reason, honestly. MeshGearFox answered that pretty well.)

I love that in 2015 the more money was put into building a website the slower it is and the more unbearable it is to browse.
