I guess the conclusion we're all reaching here about Complements is that you can't improve on perfection!

Varia is here, and it's pretty awesome.

For those that don't know, it's a shmup by Kairos.

I second Varia. We were just talking about it earlier tonight in the irc channel!

Also, it'd be great to see something about Brave Karma Warriors.  There's a pretty cool video of it on youtube, and after all, cactus originally started it as an entry in the B-Games competition (i think?).  I believe cactus also said to expect a release sometime around december?

And finally, there's Kaipuu.  I can't remember if maybe it's been linked on the frontpage before.  But it's a pretty fun little exploration platformer with minimalist graphics and color palette.  sort of in the vein of knytt and Seiklus:

It's not perfect, but has some cool elements.  I was surpised by the into montage, expecting it to just be this emo-ish dumped by your girlfriend setup.

Akuchizoku (demo) is here! It's got your usual Cactus batshitloco charms and pixels bigger than your HEAD.

http://www.willhostforfood.com/users/dorkman/akuchizoku_compo.zip

It's not perfect, and the gameplay definitely punishes first timers heavily, but it's still a damn fine game in it's current state, and bound to get awesomer.

The music makes me cream.

Heh, Melly, I was just about to post a thread about Akuchizoku.  It's really cool and very difficult.  Reminds me a little bit of Ablation.

I like the setup too: Creepy mental hospital, the future, talking dogs.  I just wish it could be trimmed down in length a little bit.

Cactus rocks Smiley.

Since everyone seems to like Cave Story-esque exploration platformers, here's a in WIP one that I posted on indygamer a while ago. I think it has potential..

Dreaming about Mario Galaxies (hooray!) reminded me of this game that placed first in the Suomipelit competition in 2006.  I can't read a word of it but it appears to be called "Soosiz" (Sausage?) by someone named "Wiliz" ... and it's a simple 2D platformer where you happen to be walking around on sausages.  Gravity kindly pulls you to the closest sausage surface, unless you're too far from the surfaces, in which case you fall to your doom.  Needless to say, I highly recommend it.

Here's a screenshot of the game, with annotations:

And here's the competition page:
http://www.suomipelit.com/index.php?c=naytakilpailu&id=4

And the download link:
http://www.suomipelit.com/files/kilpailu/4/Wiliz_soosiz.zip

(Has this been covered?  ... I think that the 2006 competition was mentioned on indygamer or tigsource before, but can't find it!  Kaipuu is the 2007 winner.)

Adam Foster recently released the last part in the first episode of Minerva, his amazing Halflife2-Mod. I've played through it a few days ago and I think it's vastly better than Valve's own HL2:Episode1, in fact, it's one of the best games I've played in the last few months.

The story takes place in the Halflife-universe, on a tiny island somewhere in the baltic sea that has been burrowed out by the Combine. You are dropped off there by the unknown and unseen character calling herself Minerva, who sends you (sometimes cryptic) text messages, to inform you of important events or to insult you, for example. She doesn't seem to care about your life, but wants you to survive as long as possible to gather information, and cross the Combines' plans. Guided by Minerva, you begin to explore what the Combine are up to, descending ever deeper into the island's underground.

One very nice thing about the mod is that you'll rarely see the loading screen - there's almost an hour of gameplay in each map, because they are created in a very economic way. Since you are descending ever deeper, you have several layers of rooms on the same map, all below each other. The long time you spend in each map sometimes allows you to see into areas you will only reach a while later, and makes it possible to have enemies appear in a realistic fashion: sometimes you can see Combine hurrying along above or below you some time before they actually get to you, which adds a lot to the feeling of realism in the game.

MedO, very nice!  Can I post what you just wrote as "Guest Reviewer?" (with perhaps a few grammatical edits for clarity?)

Go ahead. Smiley

Edit: I've reworked the text a bit, please use the new one if you aren't already about to submit the story.

Tormishire looks pretty great.  Indygamer has a nice little interview with its author conducted by moshboy!

Today I stumbled across a very decent freeware game which seems to be fairly unknown—search engine queries I tried didn't return anything related to it—so I thought I would post about it here.

Mad Energy is an overhead mouse-controlled game made by Gensai which uses an interesting play mechanism.

What makes the game (as far as I know) unique is that you can only fire a single shot, which ricochets off walls until you collect it again. Retrieving the shot is necessary because your own life energy depletes whilst you are separated from it. Collecting it again refills your health to its current maximum, and you can stop the shot moving and attempt to recall it with successive clicks of the left mouse button.

Rather than being a straightforward action game, Mad Energy requires an increasingly methodical approach as the difficulty increases.

A download link can be found on this page.

Edit: The above URL no longer works, but Tim W. has mirrored the game here.

As I fear my comment won't show up on the current topic again, I'll also post it here. I'm not quite sure if the game suits the site so well, because it's neither really original nor creative, but that's yours to decide Smiley The game is "Portal - The Flash version" and as the title subtly suggests it's basically a clone of the game Portal, which is included in "The Orange Box" alongside Half-Life 2 Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2, made into a 2D Flash game. You can find it there: ttp://www.armorgames.com/games/portaltheflashversion_game.html
Even though I make it sound so bad it's still a very fun game, as the concept also works out in 2D, it's only less amazing than it most likely is in 3D. The goal, "get to the exit", is the same as in many other 2D games, but the way you get there is different to all of them.
Also it is a nice game to be played "cooperatively", as likely everybody will get to a point where he needs some help, although there are luckily only few really frustrating levels Smiley Fortunately the game even saves your progress, so you can also go on playing some other time.

oh man, portal flash de-make!  The portal mechanic is actually perfectly fun in 2D.  i'm surprised it hadn't been exploited before.

If you like Super Punch Out and Jazzuo, then you'll probably like After School. Just about as craptastic as a clone game can get...
