My vote goes towards Punishment!

Seeing as Derek seems to be in a masochistic mood lately (Seriously. Sexyhiking? Bastardhammerclimbing! Impassabletreewhytheheckdidnthebringthesawinsteadofthehammer?!) I thought he might enjoy this one. Pretty fun, not that I got very far, though you have to love the animation of the guy too.

And no, I have no idea what the aim of the game is either. Enjoy!

[re Kaipuu]
I gave it a try, because I liked Knytt quite a bit, but I put it down eventually, because I didn't really know what was going on.

I don't understand finnish either, but I played it a bit yesterday.  The aim of the game seems to be to collect all the little white/black flames.  To be able to get them all you have to gain new powers by collecting the bigger colored flame things -- I think each one gives you one new power for either the white or the black guy, so they end up being able to do different things (you switch between them by touching the sun things).  You can also return to the starting point (seemingly keeping progress) by hitting space, and I think you save by hitting down in front of the tombstone (at least the hd spins up when you do that, haven't actually attempted to load anything yet though).

Anyways, I managed to collect most of the flames but some of them seem impossible to get even after you get all the powers.  One of the powers mentioned 'teleport' though, so I probably just have to figure out how to use that..

I should really be paid for educating people about the fucking scene.

Oh, sigh yourself. So I haven't checked up on him in a few months.

Sorry for wasting your time, but thanks for the education anyway. I'm happy to see that he's been making more games.

I don't know if it has already been added...but Super Mario War is friggin' awesome! I love the classic 2D approach to the Smash Bros. concept....

I second Punishment. And why not Punishment 2 that was released only a day ago.

PUNISHMENT: THE PUNISHING

Without spoiling too much, I can say that this game is down right evil. The gameplay revolves around tricky platforming, and flipping switches to open the door to the next level. Except there's one big twist that will make your mother cry. Everytime you get to a new level you have to flip all the switches in each and everyone of the earlier levels again. So you have to make it all the way down to the bottom level, and start flipping the switches over and over. And over.

It also features a two player mode for added frustration, as well as a highscore table that keeps track on how many times you've died, and how long it took you to finish the game.

I'd like to put in a good word for Darklink570's:

Logi-Gun

He describes it as "a weapon-based puzzle platformer", which sums things up pretty well. The graphics are very clean and simple. You can choose from 5 characters, which  are all pretty much the same, and the game sorely lacks music. Aside from that, the game is a pretty fun little romp, and kept me interested right to the end. He's a rather promising developer, so it'd be nice to see him take his games a little bit further.

Here is a game that is certainly worth mentioning. I have not seen it mentioned anywhere on the site (though I might have missed it).

Iter Vehemens ad Necem

Used to play this when I was on a PC. Seems to have stopped development, which is a shame. The game is very very playable though.

It is a rouge-like with stupidly involved and complex combat, health and materials simulation. However, it remains quite fun to just go in with 'guns blazing' as it were.

Definitely recommended.

I still play IVAN from time to time.  I never get anywhere, but I enjoy dying pointlessly in new ways.  I think one time I managed to make my character choke to death on his own vomit.

IVAN is awesome, and a lot easier to jump in to then, say, Nethack. It's insanely hard, but in what other game can you get your head kicked off by a unicorn or vomit on sumo wrestlers?

Shame it's not being updated any more...

Today I visited the Popcap-Developer forums to see what casal game developers have to say and have a laugh but I was supprised to actually find a good game.

Kapitan Binary feels alot like alien humanoid and has really nice graphics. The illustrations at the beginning are hilarious.
Website: http://binarny.pjwstk.edu.pl/en/autorzy.html
The website has this to say: "The game was designed and developed by Twin Bottles for Polish-Japanese Institute of Information Technology." Sounds indie enough to me.

Wait, wasn't Kaptain Binary already reviewed here? It seems really familiar.

Still, you gotta love a game that spells its own name wrong on the website. Wink

The New Satan Sam.

Not sure if this been reviewed before, couldn't find it by searching. Awesome platformer game by James Whitehead, some Austrailian guy who no one has probably heard of. Tongue He's working on a commerical game right now, I think.

Everything is this game is %100 made by the creator, including the music, which is surprisingly good. Your character is a little devil guy named Sam who must fight hordes of evil creatures from the "Overland".

It's a bloody hard game, belive me, but worth the download. I still haven't beat it...

Satan Sam really was a great game, looking forward to tormishire too... although given how long it took NSS to come out, this is still a ways off.  The one thing I DIDN'T like about Satan Sam given its crushing difficulty is that you kept the same stock of lives throughout (Looks at TAGAP too). It's ultimately harsh if you scrape through a level on your final life just to be utterly incapable of finishing the next one. Great art though, and fantastic weapons.

And yeah, I think we covered Captain Binary before, I wasn't all that impressed with it but I don't remember why. I think it just didn't play as well for me as AH did. Hmm.

Oh you're right it really was reviewed. But not the homepage spells it wrong but you and the reviewer. That's also the reason why I didn't find it. It really is kapitan, that's polish for... captain surprisingly.
