Hi all,

I'm just getting started in doing composition and audio work. Right now I do not have a desk set up and I recently moved into a small apartment. Space is very limited and I've been looking into what kind of workstation I can set up. Ideally it would be compact and cheap. I realize this can be tough since you want to have monitors spaced out and raised but I'm trying to figure it out.

The WS7500 desk looks promising.

What do you all use for your work spaces? Do you have any advice on setting something up within space and $ limitations?

Thanks.

my computer desk is just a regular old wooden desk. monitors have their own stands either side of this and keyboard(the non computery one :p) has its own stand. Doesn't take much to get started or work with as long as it's comfortable to work at and practical. I'm in a similar situation having moved house a few times in the past few years and portability is important to me. If you're planning on working long hours at the desk google the term "ergonomics in the workplace." It's how the right furniture can decrease fatigue/strain on your body when working at a desk all day. worth a read up and find what suits you. in particular I'd point out the keyboard drawer making the keyboard be lower than can be comfortable (I don't like those desks personally - also because I cant fit my legs under them being 6'2" :p).

Hey, thanks for the feedback on your setup.

I'm also 6'1", so the keyboard holders have always been pretty awkward for me as well! I figure the stands would be the best bet at this point, because many of the larger desks which have monitor stands built-in take up massive space and cost a lot.

What kind of stand do you use for the musical keyboard? Is it separate from the desk?

Thanks again. Seriously looking into buying options now..

Hey,

I'm using an Ikea desk at the moment and I'm quite happy with it:
http://www.dawidwmika.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/studio-foto-34.jpg

The monitors are standing on shelves attached to the desk with 3 EKBY TÖRE brackets per shelf.

What I hate the most in those expensive "studio desks" is that space for LCD is elevated which is contrary to advices given by ergonomics. I like to use one big lcd (24' in this case) and when it's standing on the desk, the upper edge in on the level of my eyes which is highly desirable.

yeh it's just a standard keyboard stand. something like this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/images2500x2500/auray_ksp_2x_keyboard_stand_937252.jpg
It's an electric piano so it's pretty damn big. You might fit a smaller keyboard in somewhere a bit neater but it's nice to have it separate to the desk to get a bit more room to work in.

I'd only consider buying a purpose built desk if/when I finally have my own house bought and paid for and can start looking at permanent options. Those things are indeed cumbersome and pricey!

I bought these stands also for reasonable money and some acoustic pads as well. http://www.gear4music.ie/Recording-and-Computers/Studio-Monitor-Speaker-Stands-Pair/6PM Would recommend it over having the speakers on the desk as it gives better options to position them appropriately as well as better isolation (don't want them sitting on the desk which will affect the sound). I'm still figuring stuff out and learning as I go and buying better stuff as and when I can afford it but for now this setup works quite well for me. Next step is acoustic treatment for the rest of the room and some better hardware ^^

Any kind of table that doesn't have too much desk space that is going to reflect the speakers signals back into your ears.

Something simple and tall enough for you.

To raise speakers to ear height on the cheap - bricks or concrete blocks.

You can even put a towel or rubber mat under and on them to keep them stable and isolated.

Prefab desks with speaker placement shelves are a waste as they're never quite the right height, and also they aren't adjustable.

Need a rack mount too?

Spend the money on something like auralex room treatment kits and get a better monitoring environment.

Keyboard Stand - get one of these: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/on-stage-stands-standard-keyboard-stand

Even better, find one on local craigslist, or classifieds.

If you're earning well from your music, then start investing it into 'stuff'.

As Dioltas mentioned those speaker stands I have in a professional studio, good thing about those and a thin width desk is placement options and height options for the speakers.

Thanks, everyone! I've been looking through the links and your advice and should have something set up soon!

I've been googling around and finding mostly peoples' prefab setups which don't have much opportunity for customization, so I'm pleased to find other options.

This is hugely informative and helpful.

You might want to search for Ikea's Jerker desk, I got mine second hand (it's discontinued sadly) and I'm quite happy about it, it's very flexible and you can add/remove what you don't need, you can probably find it very cheap Smiley

Hahaha. That's where I've most recently camped out, but it's an actively shared space. It's quite possible if I don't get my own setup I will end up with coffee on my gear  Smiley

This is what I use (http://www.versatables.com/products/split-level-adjustable-computer-table/) - it's totally great. Does exactly what professional studio workstations do, and is much cheaper.
