Is that code editor any good?

It's pretty awful, but it's not hard to write your code in another editor instead by opening the *.p8 file and going to town.

There's a free online player that can do most of what the not-free application can do, as far as running games goes. (There are some games that take advantage of oddities the webplayer doesn't observe, but not many.) You can use the not-free application to develop and test games, not so much the online player.

It depends. When you've got a PICO-8 cartridge ( ROM / PNG ) you need PICO-8 to play it. However, developers can upload their cartridge to the PICO-8 website which enables anybody to play it using the web-based emulator ( as Pineapple referred to ). Alternatively developers can export a standalone web-based version and host it themselves.

When you purchase PICO-8 you get the ( Windows / Mac OS X / Linux ) standalone application which is a emulator and dev-kit in one.
