I think I want to make text-based rpg, but I want to make a game with stat battles. I just don't know how you would do encounters, since they can't be randomized since there's no walking.

I looked around on youtube and there was a game called Sanctuary that included battles that were stat based, but I wasn't sure gameplay wise what was going on just by watching.

Edit: My only other post was one in 2012...about text based rpgs. That's funny. I forgot about it.

I think you need to just simulate a battle with the stats, output text based on what happened, and end the battle. Encounters generally are random as you walk around, but they can be more complex when they are required to be. You move around by typing "move at [place]" and you usually output a list of places where you can go as well.

Look up things like the BBS game Legend of the Red Dragon and maybe play a MUD for a day or two.

As starsrift said, MUDS have lots of at least decent combat systems. I designed a turn-based, classic final fantasy / any other RPG style combat system once which I was pretty proud of.
