Hi guys,

I am working on launch trailer for my game - Blasty Flight.
I would like to use some well know songs from 80'ies (I mean Top Gun Soundtrack) but in midi versions. Is it legal?
These midi versions aren't original, they are in low quality ofc.

What do you think about it?

There are sites like that online for songs transposed to MIDI, the problem being is that there are copyright laws against this if you intend to use it commercially.

Because a song (Provided measures have been taken) has 2 copyrights:
One is the copyright of the recording, this would be the track
The second is the copyright of the composition

So if you use a MIDI version of a song, you will need to change the song somewhat

To be honest I wouldn't risk the hassle of copyright because its a complicated matter, but the choice is yours

It's a technicality, but you can't use MIDI in your video, because MIDI is not an audio format (it's not a recording of actual music). Either way, using copyrighted music in your trailer is illegal. As a professional composer, my advice is: don't do it.

What? Why?

You've got so many options other than wasting time looking for free stuff.

1. Did you have a composer on the project? Edit the in-game tracks to fit the trailer. Or commission a track for the trailer.
2. There are tons of great music libraries that'll have much easier to find, better tagged, higher quality content than free sites. And not expensive, what you'll be looking at will be  in the range of $10 to $50.
3. Dude, you're on a subforum literally crawling with composers. Literally crawling. :

What about using mod music? There are some good tracks made on trackers.
Probably you could ask the author for permission and it will be it.
